It's not all about creating the next superstars. If we can pull through some players that end up leaving us for fees rather that drifting into the abyss, then it has worked. It's hardly Southampton but we will make some money from these 2 leaving.

Bolton Wanderers manager Dougie Freedman has stated that his team may be forced to change the way they play if they don’t find the right attacking options before the start of the season.

He admitted that the club were looking at the possibility of another loan move for Joe Mason, who scored 6 goals in 16 appearances last season but may have to look at other targets unless he becomes available.

Speaking at a press conference at the club’s Euxton training ground, he said: “The situation is fairly simple, Joe Mason is not up for loan as we speak, right now. We had a very good time last year with Joe and if he came up for loan, then I’d look at the situation but there’s a big market out there.

He also suggested that his preferred way of playing is with two strikers but current circumstances don’t allow him to do that: “I personally do like to play with two strikers, but you’ve got to have two that are on the same wavelength and it’s very very difficult to find that. Not a lot of teams can find that because the academy systems don’t train that anymore.

“If we do find the right men, then we’ll do our very best, but if we can’t we’ll have to change the way we play.”

New signings 

Of the new signings Freedman’s already made, he refused to single out any for particular praise, instead focussing on the impact it’s had on the existing players: “It’s very early to judge [the new signings] now they’re here, but I have seen an improvement in the players around them. Training and intensity has upped because of the new faces.

“So I’m saying the likes of Jermaine Beckford, Jay Spearing, Matt Mills and Andy Lonergan have looked very impressive in pre-season”

The former Crystal Palace striker also hinted that clearing out some of the older players in his time at the club, such as Martin Petrov, Kevin Davies and Zat Knight has been very productive for his pre-season preparations this time around: “The problem is, when you have personnel, that’s when you can approach pre-season differently.

“When you’ve got players that can cope with more strain on their body then you can possibly have more intense sessions. It’s very difficult to put certain players through a regime that they can’t cope with and they get injuries, which isn’t very good.”

The Trotters manager also put a stop to the rumours regarding Adam Bogdan’s immediate future as well as those of other saleable assets such as Mark Davies and Chung-Yong Lee. He did, however suggest that the Hungary goalkeeper would be for sale at the right price.

He said: “We’ve only had one bid come in, for my goalkeeper [Adam Bogdan] and it wasn’t anywhere near what we found as acceptable so we rejected that. Adam’s happy to stay so we move on.”

Freedman stressed the importance of signings if the club are to achieve this season but didn’t put any specific targets on where he wants Bolton to finish.

He added: “I am still looking to add three attacking options and if I can get the right three, I’m pretty sure people will find us a hard place to come and take points. Our away record was very good last year and we can try and keep that up.

“I don’t try and put any expectations on us but what I will say is, I feel we are a stronger group on and off the field and that will help us.”
