I'm not sure the UKIP switch is that significant to the result. The LD vote collapse has ultimately been terrible for Labour because they have gone to the Tories I presume because of the fear of SNP influence that was peddled by the right wing media.

In the final analysis I don't think Labour differentiated themselves from the Conservatives enough and hence had a mixed message depending upon whether they were fighting in Scotland or England and it just confused people and helped the Tory narrative of fear and chaos prevail.

The SNP had the strongest anti-austerity anti-right message and did very well on it. Labour are caught between a rock and a hard place now. Lurch back to the centre right and they probably will never win a seat in Scotland again. Go left and they may re-claim their heartland but end up back where they were under Kinnock.

Take away the Scottish seats and labour still got well beat. They have had it in Scotland. The SNP have a mandate to demand another referendum. Sturgeon has just said it will be at the forefront of their manifesto at the next Scottish elections. If their votes stand up there will be another referendum before the next general election me thinks.

We'll see, things can change as quickly as they have already. Scotland is (probably) not as stupid as they have voted.

Labour was always on a hiding to nothing by having that idiot In charge, they've only got themselves to blame as they didn't pick his brother as leader. They won't get anywhere in the foreseeable until they rectify it.

By the way I tactically voted to get Hilling out by drawing a cock and balls on the slip.

One of the newly elected SNP MP's is a 20 year old politics student who has yet to complete his degree. Seriously, how can anyone cast a vote for a 20 year old student to run anything?

Like it or not, white van man is todays guy on the factory floor, mine or shipyard worker of yesterday. Perhaps if labour needs to start listening to them instead of treating them as bigots?

you like a stuck record with your anti UKip/racist stuff Traff

OK, UKIP aren't racist at all.

When you say racist which race are you referring to as their manifesto wanted greater rights for people living in the commonwealth and there's a few of those with a rather swarthy population

Yes, my point was the threat of an SNP coalition that Cameron pulled out with help from the media is probably what cost Labour in England with tactical voting and the like. My point was that they need to try and reclaim Scotland but the path to do that hurts them in England. To improve in England they just need a clear centre message. But I doubt that will be enough without regaining at least some Scottish ground.

In other words there are tough times ahead for them. Like the Tories in the late 90's early 2000's.

Feel a bit sorry for Clegg, he was clearly shafted by entering into a coalition. But what choice did he have? Refuse and become the politician who refused to work together for the good of the country. Hardly a choice.

Fuck off Farage.

I'm quite please he's not won a seat, I think UKIP have only got one seat haven't they, which is one less than they had yesterday.

Nobody really believed they were ever going to win anything more than two or three seats (unless they're a bit simple) but what they have done is shaken things up and made it easier for the Tories to get power.

Cameron must be delighted with the help that Farage has given him
