October 11, 20169 yr Altrincham is surrounded by affluent area's, very different, and much easier to get people to it, I've worked here for 10 years. Parking is cheap, 20p on the roads. The food market is quality, but Bolton also is not so bad on the Market, and now the Vaults, but people will ignore that....and look at the eastern Europeans "gobbing" on the steps.....no different to the scally kids that used to gob all around the fountains, while robbing other kids. Love how people re-write history. Bolton has always been pretty rough!!! Bradshawgate, Manor St, and Newport st are the places that need looking at.

That's what I was thinking! :-) If one of them takes pity on me and offers me a cup of tea then I'm calling it a day. Pablo is right though. Bolton has always been rough around the edges. That's what makes it the Bolton I know and love. I reckon half the people who slag it off would rather live in a hipster type village that they would also moan about.
October 11, 20169 yr Used to go to Ashton a fair bit as a kid as my gran lived there. Bus station straight to the market and a cracking chippy (mother Hubbard's?). Anyway dunno what its like now but as a kid it seemed good.

October 11, 20169 yr Both Bury and Altrincham have benefited massively from the Metrolink Any reason why it couldn't come to Bolton? Been to Altrincham markets at night, walked back to the tram stop and it's been packed. People have traveled to get there. Similarly, been to Bury market a few times on a saturday afternoon. Jumped on the tram into Manc, out to Bury, gone round the market, been to a few shops, had a few beers, jumped on the tram and headed home. Grand day out

Metro link themselves would have it going everywhere they could if given free run.

No, obviously not, but the fact the metro link would tempt people to Manchester and other areas was a consideration in whether it came here, along with the engineering and everything else obviously , that's all I'm saying, not agreeing with it or saying it's justified, but concerns about ease of access away from towns is considered a downside. ( to some)
October 11, 20169 yr Why does everyone love the metrolink?? Because it's superb. Regular, fast, reliable and cheaper than the train. Not done Radcliffe much good, so not a miracle solution.
October 11, 20169 yr Mainline my arse, you have to change in Manchester, Wigan or Preston to go anywhere meaningful these days... Manchester Airport and Eccles to name two have both. I thought the Metrolink could go along the old Bolton-Eccles line, but there's probably too much development along it now. I'd have quite liked getting pissed up in Manchester and being able to stumble onto the Metrolink and stumble off at The Royal Bolton Hospital or Lever Edge Metrolink stations...
October 12, 20169 yr To be fair, the train now, once it's arrived, is fast as fuck. It's getting Christmas time soon, try getting to Bolton at 6pm when full trains are even fuller with fucknuggets from the markets.
October 12, 20169 yr I've read somewhere that they are looking at trams (from Germany) that have an undercarriage that can run on train rails and tram tracks. October 12, 20169 yr Saw plans for metrolink to go to bolton via prestwich. Down bury new road then turn left just before m60. Be a long journey that one.
