Site Supporter Cheese Posted October 10 Site Supporter Posted October 10 Just watching it now for the first time. Fucking hell, it's very good innit? No wonder it caused such a furore when it was first broadcast. Quote

No wonder it caused such a furore when it was first broadcast. Indeed. I remember watching it as it aired and thinking "fuck". Two quotes from the wiki page on it sum it up: Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian called it a "masterpiece", writing: "It wasn't until I saw Threads that I found that something on screen could make me break out in a cold, shivering sweat and keep me in that condition for 20 minutes, followed by weeks of depression and anxiety". For the horror of Threads to work, Jackson made an effort to leave some things unseen: "to let images and emotion happen in people's minds, or rather in the extensions of their imaginations".[13] He later recalled that while BBC productions would usually be followed by phone calls of congratulations from friends or colleagues immediately after airing, no such calls came after the first screening of Threads. Jackson later "realised...that people had just sat there thinking about it, in many cases not sleeping or being able to talk". Quote

I implore anybody to watch this and still say we should abandon Trident Also mad that this could happen and yet governments still have absolutely no interest in peace. A really thought provoking, upsetting and dark watch. Going to have to watch a few episodes of fuckin Chucklevision or something to get my head back on Quote
Members DazBob Posted October 11 Members Posted October 11 Four Kings on Amazon. A four-parter telling the story of the golden era of British boxing. Bruno, Lewis, Benn and Eubank. I've never known that Lewis was such a cunt to Bruno. It's a decent watch. Quote
Not in Crawley Posted October 11 Posted October 11 Just this pic can cause people of a certain generation to break out in a cold sweat Was the cover of the Radio Times advertising the film!). Thankfull I was a little too young in 84 to watch it, but watched it at a film society showing at uni as there was bog all else to do that night - still terrified me. Quote
green genie Posted October 11 Posted October 11 Watched it as a 14 year old and took comfort from my dads words of wisdom, don’t worry, Devonport is such a target Plymouth will be vaporised. Quote

MancWanderer Posted October 11 Posted October 11 Got a feeling that I saw Threads first time around but have no memory of it. Just downloaded it after seeing the comments above Quote
London Wanderer Posted October 11 Posted October 11 great film not sure I can handle a second watch. on second thoughts, fck it. Quote
SatanGreavsie Posted October 11 Posted October 11 Yeh, says its available for 11 months on I Player. Should be mandatory viewing, but maybe not in the Xmas run up as it'll spoil things just a little bit. Or in fact a lot. But then again, we've moved on in them 40 years. So in the end it's a historical piece that allows us to bask in the security and certainty we currently luxuriate in, thank goodness................. Quote
MancWanderer Posted October 11 Posted October 11 Blimey 5 seconds in I remembered that I’d seen Threads before. I was in Sheffield 82-85 Takes me right back 40 years to Frankie GTH and ‘Two Tribes’, the tensions at the times, the anti nuclear protest on the uni campus, the genuine worry about nuclear fallout, Greenham Common protests Great film that. Bit shonky compared to today’s productions but loved the cutaways that left stuff unsaid. Quote
Moderators Zico Posted October 12 Moderators Posted October 12 Started watching last night Can't believe how young Reece Dinsdale looks, and he's 25 at the time Mind you I only ever imagine him in ID and it was another 11 years before that Quote
Site Supporter Spider Posted October 12 Site Supporter Posted October 12 Watched it last night. its genius it’s in just how gritty and ordinary the characters are. but by fuck it just gets more bleak and harrowing. Love it, Quote
