Re. Thomason, one must assume Bristol City's scouts have watched him & see he has worth. For fun let's imagine they have a clue.

Fair to assume also that, almost by coincidence, they've seen Sheehan, Dempsey etc. at the same time. They have a deal of cash but it's Thomo they've come for.

We may find that odd but it's them splashing the dosh.

Brristol City have a good record of signing players from this league who go on to do well

No offence to the lad but for us is he not just a bang average squad player, there's a wringing of hands on social media as though we are letting the next big thing go for next to nothing?

No, he isn't.

There is a reason Evatt had looked after him and developed him.

Probably the same reason that he is being courted by an experienced manager from the league above.

By properly, do you mean with my eyes half shut or something?

All about opinions and I don’t expect everyone to agree with me, but you fire a ball into Sheehan 10 times when he’s got a few opposition players around him, then do the same with Thomason - the difference in outcome would be stark.

Well is first touch isn’t the same as Sheehan. But if that’s the yard stick you could call most of the team uncomfortable on the ball then .

My concern would be getting someone in, with so little time left. Even with cash available, it would be a test of the club's system etc.

We have brought someone in to cover that position Maghoma . I don’t think we will necessarily go out and spend the money if he goes but wait till January and see we’re we are and what we need

I agree with you. Value and worth are two different things

Folk can argue worth all day long. It's an opinion. Value is what two clubs agree on

We're talking (arguing) about worth though

I don't think a players worth is only ever determined by what someone pays for them

Because A player like Messi can be rated at £100m without ever commanding a transfer fee

My opinion is that You can look at a transfer and think "he's not worth that much", or "that's cheap,"

I wouldn't  think "I didn't think gary Madine was worth £8m, but he must be, because that's what Cardiff paid for him"

I find that a bit strange

Lovely to see the 'Efficient Markets Hypothesis' being debated on here.

Cheese - surprised that Cheese is taking the Chicago school stance that has become economic orthodoxy since the Thatcher/Reagan years.

Zico - now he's more a Warren Buffet man and he knows it only works in text books and there's loads of irrational behaviour out there.

I think you need to consider the lifetime cost of a player. Plenty of very good players have moved for less than a million but are probably on huge wages. Thomason won't be on much here and likely not on much more at Bristol. So over the course of a three to four year contract he is probably quite cheap and worth the risk.

The kid is nice and tidy with a good engine. Does he run games? No does he dominate midfield? No, does he create many chances? Not really, does he chip in with his fair share of goals? Nope.

City obviously see something in him which is potential at this moment in time. Pearson will no doubt want something different in his midfielder than Evatt does. If they wanted the same or he was giving Evatt what he wanted he’d be in our midfield now. It’s horses for courses.

I hope he has a decent career but as long as IE is here it won’t be with us

I find that bizarre.

No one really runs a game at this level on their own. Any such player who showed such promise would soon be snapped up.

We are stating to tick as a top unit, by virtue of all the components coming together, not an individual.

We're only two games in though, with more difficult opponents to come.

Judgements as to who does what will be made by the management, if that means any of the three midfield type substitutes coming in for a start then it will be for good reason, maybe needs must.

Oh I completely agree with you. Worth is subjective and is an opinion. But, and I may be completely wrong, I think that what @Cheese was saying is that this becomes negated by the actual transfer value and therefore becomes the worth

Anyway, fuck it. We won. It’s Saturday night and I’m becoming philosophical. Time for beer :D

Sheehan probably does have finer ball control.

However if you ask sheehan to withstand physical challenges or make crunching tackles, then compare that to someone bigger and stronger, again the difference will be clear.

Room for all types.

Tomo has plenty qualities (passing quickly and accurately mainly) but I am struggling to think of a midfielder in recent years with less technique and guile when it comes to tackling. If he leaves, we will have a lot less free kicks to defend and less yellow cards.

The (hopefully first) offer appears to be £1m.    That's 4% of what they've received for the person they deem he's a replacement for.

I wish him well, but if he's a replacement he's worth more than 4% of the value.

He's offered him two new contracts during his spell as manager and generally speaks very well of him?

Ok fair do’s will reword, is he integral to what we do and Evatts team? No he isn’t.

if they had tabled a £1m bid for Morley or Dempsey you could understand it better because they’re mainstays of a team who play easy on the eye football and seem to be going places. If you look at our midfield options they are probably the stand outs other teams Would look at.

If an offer did come in for those you’d expect Evatts responses to be “every player has his price but we don’t want to lose our better players” he’s stopped short of saying that in this instance

He spoke well of Aimson and offered him an extension… there are players that pad out a squad and are in your first 15 or so and players that play every week. Both GT and Aimson are/were the former

Did he offer Aimson a contract extension?

Aimson wanted off last pre season, Evatt wanted him to stay, spoke about another 12 months at the end of the forthcoming season. Not much changed between then and Jan and Exeter were still there. He just wanted to play so went

I can't find any evidence of that, but either way, it seems he didn't offer him a contract extension

And even so, I think it's a different thing to consider offering a new contract at the expiry of a player's current contract (Aimson) rather than offering two contract extensions to a player with time still left to run on that contract (Thomason)

Well he did. I know for a fact he did.

anyway, extensions are offered for a number of reasons. Not for one minute saying GT didn’t deserve it, just that I don’t think his influence on the team will be any greater than it is now. Regular sub appearances and maybe one or two sequences of games in a row where he does a few nice things. Tidy player non the less

Any examples? Pearson signed Kane Wilson from Forest Green and soon sold him to Derby. They bought our ex player Joe Williams for over a million and he wouldn’t improve our midfield. That puts the supposed fee for Tomo into some perspective.

Oh right, I didn't realise you knew for a fact 🙄

Rob Atkinson, Mark Sykes, George Tanner; they also signed Anis Mehmeti last January

You might not rate Joe Williams but he's a regular at the league above ours (when not injured) and I think it's probably a bit harsh to make any judgement on Wilson given how quickly and seriously he got injured

They've just signed Jason Knight, who I think will be a good'un, and have had two of their own Academy graduates sign for Premier League clubs for eight-figure fees as well as having a couple more of their own Academy-produced youngsters playing in their first-team so they have an idea of what's required of a young player in the second tier

Which is not to claim Thomason's move (if it happens) will work out, but still

Sounds like he's off to me

They got £25m for their player so we should be asking for much more than £1m for a 22 year old
