But the timing could not be worse. Brexit just added one too many factors for a lot of European hauliers and they are understandably avoiding the aggro. Quote

Brexit just added one too many factors for a lot of European hauliers and they are understandably avoiding the aggro. I saw a bit on sky news the other day, the massive haulage companies on the continent make Eddie Stobart look like your local Hermes outfit in comparison. They were saying many of their drivers simply refuse to travel to the UK at the moment as most get paid by the mile. It just isn't worth the hassle at the moment. Sure it will sort itself out eventually but in the mean time stuff just isn't arriving. Perfect storm of issues of which Brexit is just one. Quote
Spider Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 Indeed. It’s possible for Brexit to have its good points and it’s bad ones. Likewise, being in the EU has its good/bad. Whisper this, but it’s possible to have differing opinions on the same subject. It really is. Diplomacy is a skill not necessarily bestowed upon us all though. Quote

We’ll see the consequences if it happens. You might have different insights then. I hope it doesn’t happen. Quote

Can we think of any examples of a government taking control of a private company? I’ll kick us off with Northern Rail. Northern rail was a franchisee. All franchise agreements have that built in Need to think of a better example pal Quote

Aye As I said from 2015, the top heavy bureaucracy was the main reason I voted leave. We all know the reasons I became unsure further down the track for mainly personal reasons and those of my colleagues who have suffered. The rest of us aren’t out of the woods yet either and have taken financial blows that will take a long long time to recover from. The EU needs reform for sure. But we have no influence anymore. Quote

It’s close enough that I say it makes for a good example. Quote

Which I gather is the inference of article 122. Although article 122 is rather unspecific: Without prejudice to any other procedures provided for in the Treaties, the Council, on a proposal from the Commission, may decide, in a spirit of solidarity between Member States, upon the measures appropriate to the economic situation, in particular if severe difficulties arise in the supply of certain products, notably in the area of energy. Ani Posted January 30, 2021 Posted January 30, 2021 Lloyds took over HBOS as it was fucked, think they made about £500m profit when they eventually sold their shares back The money pumped into RBS was a lot less successful. Lloyds itself was a basically profitable business Quote
