That’s good to know, although it isn’t the question I asked 🙃

The increase will be approx £470? Winter fuel payment was up to £300? Plus it’s means tested, so those most in need still get it in December.

Overall, it seems pensioners are winning over the next 12 months or so. We’ll see who the losers are on 30 October, as I expect there will be many.

If you knew the answer, why ask? 🤷‍♂️

Your £470 figure is for those on the new state pension, most are not. You’re trying to simplify something that really isn’t.

Pensioners have arguably been winning for some time with regards to the triple lock.

At the same time though, there have been lots of criticism of the state pension in that it is one of the lowest of the major European nations.

Start to gradually raise it, and folk then start complaining that pensioners are having an unfair "share".

Can't win.

I had to look it up because you didn’t answer my question… 😉

Good news about the £63billion investment though eh?

Starmer must have been wandering around with a Boris Johnson mask on

Let’s get something clear. Even with the triple lock increase, those eligible for the full state pension (just over half) will receive £11,973 a year. That’s after a lifetime of work. As you say, it’s one of the worst in Europe.
People say that pensioners have done well under the Tories. What would it have been like under Labour?

You don’t really believe the £63 billion do you? Have you read the papers? (Not the Mirror)

The Conservatives have been in Government for the last 14 years, but... "What would it have been like under Labour?" 😁

We were specifically talking about pensions. It is a universal benefit to each and every one of us if we pay into the system. The Tories, with the Lib Dems, came up with the scheme. (the triple lock) One day you will also benefit.

No I won't, and I wouldn't expect to either.

You won’t take your state pension? Give it to Derian House. Hold on🤔

Correct. No idea about the reference to Derian House, other than I did a bit of voluntary work for them many years ago. 🤷‍♂️

It was a bet. You lost. You didn’t pay. You’ll take your pension. It’ll be worth a fortune when you retire. 👍

When I retire I’d be surprised if there is a state pension. If there is, it won’t be like it is today.

Every country has a state pension. Most are better than ours. It needs reforming that’s for sure. We’ve been over it many, many times. Why can’t everyone, in employment, have the same pension as someone in the public sector?

The auto enrolment pension contributions of employers and employees (totalling 6%)* have been brought in to ensure private pensions reduce the public pension purse. It kicked in in 2012 (?). I’d expect anyone who is 18 years old or younger at that point will get minimal state pension when they retire. It will be reduced before then.

Fair enough. I’m not that familiar with the new scheme. I was thinking more about a compulsory, contributory scheme, similar to other countries. I think Mr. Ogani explained the Australian scheme. Anything would have to be phased in though because of the cost.

😊 Yes of course. The statement about pensions improving under the Tories is true. I’m not sure if people are saying that’s a good or bad thing.

exactly this, I'll get something, but I reckon anybody 25 or under at the minute, won't be getting anything from the state - certainly the burden on the public purse won't be anywhere near as high as it is at the minute, as everybody would/should have their own personal pensions in place (how this sits with the underbelly of those who have never, and will never work, through choice, I don't know)

I think we all agree that pension reform is required but it’ll take a long time. This figure surprised me. I don’t know about younger groups.
