Site Supporter MickyD Posted August 6, 2019 Site Supporter Share Posted August 6, 2019 Anderson needs to go back to county level and get a 4 day game under his belt before he plays again. He declared himself fit for this test and obviously wasn't. Throwing a few balls into nets to prove fitness for a five day game was probably the worst fitness test prior to a test match. Not sure Jimmy would have changed much second innings. He might have got the tail I guess first time round much cheaper. I can't see Moeen playing next game he needs his confidence building up - he won't get that at Lords I don't think. Not sure on Bairstow logic - his batting has been poor for a while now. Would it not make sense to put Buttler as keeper bring in another batsman for Bairstow and take out Denly for an all rounder?

To fair he was playing regularly until his injury at the end of June. They took a chance on his fitness but it obviously backfired. That and losing the toss so that ‘Gary’ would tear us apart on the 5th day as usual and of course Smith was what determined the outcome of this Test. Guest
Leach for Moeen Foakes for Bairstow Archer for Anderson Root or Stokes to open, Roy to drop to
Site Supporter Tonge moor green jacket Posted August 6, 2019 Site Supporter Share Posted August 6, 2019 Agree about Foakes. Done well previously. Moeen an enigma; he's taken loads of wickets previously, but probably needs a break. Heard Michael Vaughan say how well Roy had played until his aberration. Give him more time? Does anyone else get the impression that Bairstow isn't the sharpest tool in the box?

Just niggly things like that suggest he’s not the best, Anderson being out takes a bit of the slack off him

Great when things are going well, but how good is he when they're not. Can he get into his teammates in such a way as to inspire them, and has he got the balls to drop someone, even if they are one of the main men? Obviously we don't know him nor what actually goes on ,but is he possibly a bit too nice?

I think when you look at someone like Vaughan he took it all on his shoulders and understood the psyche of his players and sport and how situations affected people and he tried to manage that. I'm not sure Root is there yet. You look at Australia and Paine is not really captaining them is he? Smith is leading that team. I think Root is fine - but he does look lost when things go against him and bereft of ideas or a plan. Sometimes you have to try some psychology to get players out but again not sure that is Root's thing.

Smiley
Settled down a bit with Denly and Burns. (that's me giving it the curse of death). The Ruth Strauss Foundation tributes have been a good/emotional watch. Everyone wearing red - including the Australian team. Good effort.
