Could have teamed up with Franny Lee and Freddie Hill.

Traf
In fact, Lawton might beat both.
Mounts Kipper
Just read up on Lawton Bolton offered him a place but his grandad turned the offer down in favour of Rossendale United. That was a brave move.
Mounts Kipper
Lawton was also Lofthouses hero and weren't they similar style of player? Doubt it would have worked them 2 up top.

jeep
Mortensen 23 in 25 (92%) Lofthouse 30 in 33 (91%) Lawton 22 in 23 (96%) All supposed legends but they hardly played any games between them. And I'm not stating that they aren't legends BTW. Mark Hateley played 32, scored 9!! Did they use PP's Bingo Machine to pick the team in those days? jayjayoghani
A very frail looking Tommy Lawton appears on Nat's This is Your Life. My Grandad reckoned he was the best header of the ball he'd ever seen

Doubt it would have worked them 2 up top. Lawton was the top scorer in Div 1 immediately before WWII. He was still 19 when war broke out. He really missed out on his likely best years. Nat did not pull up trees during his teenage appearances (straight from a shift down the pit!) but things fell into place once normal football resumed. As they were only 6 years apart, and both from the same school, it is hardly surprising that he viewed TL as a hero. Difficult to see them being picked together in view of both being centre forwards when there was no flexibility in formations until Don Revie played a deep-lying CF in 1954. By then Lawton's career was all but over.

Very close to the Okocha/Djorkaeff era and only because it seemed every other player in the later team was also a household name. Just like we've all said about all those players, I just wish we'd seen them in their prime rather than towards the end of their careers. Thompson was just brilliant; imagine how good he was 10-15 years younger! T O TOM TOMO Thommo! (It was a chant it seemed to work at the time!) Almost exactly my thoughts Except that I would put Tomo ahead even of Le God and the others My favourite Wanderer of all

Site Supporter Tonge moor green jacket Posted January 6, 2019 Site Supporter Share Posted January 6, 2019 Iirc, upon Nat's passing, an article explained that the actually scored many more for England, but they weren't official games. If they were added in, he would have had an incredible record.
