PHE locally had been decimated by previous cuts/changes. Staff numbers weren't available to do all the testing/tracing.

Looking back now, obviously it would have been better if they had been.

However, something had to be done- the testing industry has been built up very well.

The tracing bit, much less so, clearly. 

Several times a week I go past the testing centre at leverhulme park: Well organised, lots of staff directing cars. Poor buggers out in all weathers, having to speak to every driver- however small, that still represents more risk than most of us have to put up with.

I think the criticism aimed at some of these people is hugely unreasonable. 

Moreover, we would probably have had to expand PHE provision any how, which would have required time.

Be good to see what the eventual inquiry comes up with, and what recommendations it makes for the future.

I'm quite a keen proponent of the public sector; its responsible for a lot of good stuff and is often better than private.

That doesn't mean the private sector is automatically and though. 

We need both.

But it isn't the people on the front line they're criticising.

That's not how it comes across. The constant suggestion that company x isn't up to the job is a criticism of all, without specific details.

It's too easy to use them as a punch bag to push the line that public sector is always best.

In the instance of tracing for example, clearly more boots on the ground of local phe groups would have been preferable. 

However, with the huge numbers involved, some centralised tracing proved necessary under the circumstances. Not necessarily been particularly great, but given the tools available at the time, needs must.

You can give some leeway that the first time this happened to us was in March.

Less so about letting it happen to us again, eight months later. 

Hopefully the next time people will take it seriously from the start.

It seems fairly clear to me that it's the lack of infrastructure which is being criticised rather than the people on the ground taking the swabs.

A Government poll suggests that just 17% of people with symptoms are booking a test.

Not good.

The lack of infrastructure is a separate discussion to the response. Even whitty was questioned early doors about his approach. As he explained, "I had to deal with the situation as presented".

No doubt that inadequate resources available at the start- but the constant drip feed of criticism of these companies is there for anyone to see. It's quite shameful. 

I took the trouble of having more of a look on government website- there are hundreds of companies and individuals approved to help out with the response.

 During statements and questions- its more political ideology- why are we using private companies and not what we have. Which misses the point, they didn't exist.

At the end of all this, we will see what happens to public health and associated resources.

We obviously view it differently then. I don't think any of the criticism equates to criticism of the people at the sharp end.
