Eight people, including six Asian women, were killed in shootings at three different businesses in Atlanta and Acworth, Georgia, on Tuesday, according to local police. A male suspect was arrested and charged with several counts of murder on Wednesday, police said. At a press conference in Atlanta on Wednesday, authorities identified the four victims killed in Cherokee County.

 

I see Jimmy Kimmel has been “cancelled”, for his comments on Charlie Kirk. Really interesting in terms of the free speech vrs censorship debate in the US atm.  To me at least his comments don’t seem offensive wrt to the victim or his tragic murder, more comedic satire on the republican reaction to the event.

Kimmel said in his Monday night monologue: "The Maga Gang desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it."

The late-night host also criticised flags being flown at half mast in honour of Kirk, and mocked US President Donald Trump's reaction to the shooting.

"This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he calls a friend. This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish”.

Certainly there’s a case to be made that many of Kirk’s own comments were more offensive to political opponents and minority groups.

I think his point is badly worded, at best, but I can see why - in a divided country - networks don't want their light entertainment hosts spreading misinformation on air.

As far as I can see, nobody is advocating Kimmel should go to jail and I'm sure he'll work again. Probably on his own show once this blows over.

That's the reason he's been cancelled. Mocking Trump.  It's worth finding the clip on X of Trump's response to being asked how he's bearing up.  If ever there was proof of what a narcissist he is...

Of course I’d disagree, not that you’d bat an eyelid.  The MAGA movement has done more to undermine US democracy and its respect on the world stage, than Putin could have dared dream. Will take a decade for the Dems to fix it when they regain control in 3 years 👍

This is why it's important to post quotes in context

Him referring to Leviticus 20:13 was in response to someone quoting the wording of Leviticus 19 which calls to "love thy neighbour" to include gay people (he did also say that person was not totally wrong in doing so)

His point was that she is hypocritical in her selective Bible quoting because she would obviously not support the interpretations people often make regarding homosexuality when reading Leviticus 20:13

He thought homosexuality was a moral wrong and was an obvious homophobe, but he also was on public record as stating gay people were welcome in the conservative movement despite his views on sexuality, and he really didn't advocate for stoning gay people to death

And re. "God's perfect law when it comes to sexual matters" 

He was talking about Leviticus 18, which doesn't make any explicit call for death as a pu ishment
