Or under Ian Greaves where it took us 4 attempts I think? Sam was promoted in his 2nd season, his first season he took over part way though the season with Bolton in mid table. Greaves had two near misses before winning the league title. But both those managers were managing Bolton in the 2nd tier up against better clubs and better managers than Evatt is competing against. Some fear Rotherham and Huddersfield will be too good next season, well in Greaves title winning year he organised Bolton's budget to finish above Tottenham, Southampton, Sunderland, Sheffield United, Stoke, Crystal Palace among others. So lets not equate getting Bolton out of the 3rd Division with the more difficult task of getting Bolton out of the 2nd Division. Quote

So we go from two top six positions to mid table mediocracy because we get rid of a manager who only plays one way and we keep the same squad. We took the Wigan performance, Carlisle, Reading and Blackpool performances on the chin.....What players does Evatt recruit??? Another right wing back, Another Left wing back...All our players are under contract and Evatt wont/does not want to change Any decent manager would get that group of players into the play-offs minimum Quote

Ian Evatt, the fella you want to get rid of. Quote

I equated them because Tomski equated our current situation to the Phil Neal situation in 1991. 2 near play off misses and then a crap midtable affair. I was saying it could be like other scenarios. In reality it's all a complete load of bollocks. Past seasons mean absolutely nothing and there is no correlation or parallels whatsoever. People's memories draw comparisons but in truth they mean nothing. Nothing at all. We missed out on promotion by next to fuck all last season. Thing go even a single result better this season we get promotion. Regardless of what bullshit happened 40 fucking years ago. Quote

Guessing we will only add three and maybe a couple of loans. We wont be bringing in a natural left or right back thats for sure Quote

We're you expecting less than 90% of the squad being retained? Quote

No i expected just those two to be released no great shocks, but like Doyle in the past i think Evatt [we all now assume he is staying] will know if he is to keep his job past Oct/Nov will have to move a few players on. I wont name players on here because it is all guess work, but i would not be surprised to see five or six move on even if we take a loss on some players Quote
Whitesince63 Posted June 3, 2024 Posted June 3, 2024 I agree 51, given the obvious disappointment Evatt displayed at Wembley like you I’d expect more than a couple of the contracted players to be away, either sold or move facilitated. The bulk of the squad has proved its worth but some missing ingredients are obvious and I’m sure Evatt intends to recruit them. If not and that performance and others similar hasn’t forced him to realise that it takes more than just skill to get out of this league then he only has himself to blame if it goes toxic for him. I just hope in his time away he’s considered not just the players performances but also his own. Quote
Site Supporter FrancisFogarty Posted June 3, 2024 Site Supporter Posted June 3, 2024 Mostly I agree. What legged us up badly as we all know was that the injuries all came at the same time. The squad is strong enough but to have the centre line of keeper, captain various midfielders and striker out for a month really cost us. Oh, and not having a plan B either. Quote

I wonder which games we would have won with Baxter instead of Coleman given we needed an extra 6 points, so that's 3 games where we dropped points and Baxter would have saved goals that Coleman let in (assuming their weren't 2 games we lost that we would have won - I can't think of any). And also ignores the points that Coleman potentially saved us with some decent saves. A bit harsh given that we won so many games with Coleman in the nets, and lost plenty with Baxter. Quote
