Zico will slaughter me for this but there was a stunning bargirl at The Phoenix who had a shine for me because I only drank shandy and...well it doesn't matter now, you don't fixate on the ones you did stuff with but the ones you were too pig thick to recognise the fact that they were interested. Youri McAnespie Posted March 6, 2022 Author Posted March 6, 2022 The Phoenix one Boxing Day, it was for the hardcore - everyone dancing their arse off, just the residents playing - nowt better apart from a last minute winner or stuff with gurls. Quote

Was a regular there for both Mr Scruff and electric chair nights. Them bouncers were scarey as fook but whenever they'd catch us skinning up just say to us "is there one in it for me" and we'd pass him a bud. The big bastard with a spider tatoo on his cheek very often looked like he'd had more pills than anyone in there 😁 Always enjoyed Legend's for end of year riots or Homoelectric. One of the girls in our group brought her new fella at the time to a Homoelectric night, you could see his face turning in the que outside as it dawned on him and he turned to me and said "there's quite a few jaffas here ain't there" I just laughed at him asking did the name of the night not give you a clue. He couldnt settle and fucked off after an hour or so 😂 Quote

Was gutted when they closed it and turned the place into a Tesco. I got on well with the bouncers, the guy with the tattoos on his face is called Twinny. Proper character and not someone you’d want to get on the wrong side of. He used to confiscate ‘stuff’ off people and give it to us regulars. Top bloke if you knew him and he always let us straight in if the cue was big outside. Quote

Marc505 Posted March 6, 2022 Posted March 6, 2022 Used to love North underneath Afflecks Palace, only a really narrow long room but a great atmosphere at Sinergy nights there early-mid 00s. They later moved it to Phoenix and it was decent but not quite the same, had some good Boxing Day nights there too. Grubby place that! I remember being in Jillys a few times and being able to hear what was happening in Music Box next door through the wall in the bogs and thinking wow it sounds good in there! Only got chance to visit a couple of times though for Sunrise nights. They were good but a bit Cyberdog 😆 Quote

It absolutely pissed all over the house system, you could feel every beat and it wasn’t hard on your ears. Am getting tingles just thinking about it 😂 Quote

I often think back and wonder what great nights and clubs I missed out on around 99-02 type time period when I was into pretty much exclusively metal. The pubs around Oxford Road, Jillys, Rock Kitchen etc were great in themselves but by the time I saw the light so many places were closing or nights scaling back and I'd definitely missed some fair old evenings! One night there was 2 coppers on the door making sure they were searching everyone, fuck knows why, but I typically had a few little uns in my pocket and a bag of bud. I just looked at him with a bit of a sorry look on my face that told him all he needed to know, he pretended to search me and just sent me down the steps. Later on he came to me with a wink and said "there's gotta be somert in it for me" so gave him a bud again 😁 Quote

Homoelectric was brilliant as the girls in there who were straight had a very narrow choice, my mate used to stick me on the guestlists when he was on, one of the great pleasures in life that - swanning past the queue like lord twat. Youri McAnespie Posted March 6, 2022 Author Posted March 6, 2022 I'd often go to Tramp! at the bierkeller on a whim when I was probably too old at 30, I'd pay for being an old pervert by having to fork out twenty five sovs for a taxi home because I'd missed the train. Quote

Have a look for a monthly night night called sticky heat at a place called The Carlton club in Whalley range. Been to a few recently as my mate lives in Chorlton and is popular with that sort of crowd, reckon the average age is easily 40 plus but a decent night out with folk that still like to get off there nuts with decent music. Only draw back is, with were it is, it's only on til 1am. Had some belters there. Justin Robertson for one, and it's not been announced yet but have it on good authority that they've got Lindstrom booked later in the year. 👍 Quote

Youri McAnespie Posted March 6, 2022 Author Posted March 6, 2022 I only went to J2 a few times, once some bird who was a posh girl from Harwood was palpating my nob under the table - in the presence of her milquetoast boyfriend. To Zico's chagrin I didn't do owt with her either. Quote
Marc505 Posted March 6, 2022 Posted March 6, 2022 Only done J2 once, that was quite enough for me! Not an actual club but did anyone go Antwerp Mansion in Rusholme? Was a fairly recent thing but closed now, some mates went and showed me videos they took it, looked like something off The Wire inside there, cables sticking out of walls, holes in staircases, proper death trap.
