The Cost Of Living Crisis

Anyone felt the pinch yet?

Notice a good proportion of my hotels are quiet this week. But with the jubilee round the corner and pride the week after maybe folk are simply saving their trips for that.

Cant help but feel the media are driving a lot of it. They seem hell bent on us heading into a recession. Making people panic and stop spending.

They should be telling everyone its all gravy.

Only area Ive felt it is diesel. £154 to fill my van the other day. That's taking the piss.

£4 for Weetabix??  Can only assume you're buying branded?  Fuck that.  It's just wheat!

Just get home brand for half of that.

My missus is an absolute mug for buying branded stuff.  Granted, their are certain things that one shouldn't scrimp on, but there are plenty of others where own brand is exactly the same.

Just observations like fuck I bought it

yes it’s branded stuff, got some of the asda essentials food it isn’t that bad and the bog paper gets flushed so no need for expensive gear

It's still only about 20p a fish finger and 10p a Weetabix. I think even without the current crisis we would need to be thinking about how much we pay for our food as historically it has been ridiculously low.

We've been using the tesco double rolls, last loads longer and same price as 12 single rolls.

We've been buying the essentials range too, they're not bad tbh. Noticed the quality of Heinz and Branston beans has gone down anyway. Had the later yesterday and there was more sauce than beans, and the sauce clearly had more water in than before..

Aldi/Lidl for fake cereals.

They're basically the same cereals. With the branded stuff, you're paying for the box, and a tiny bit more salt and sugar.

Brought some Salad Cream last week

Tesco's own 90p

Opened one for a quick taste test Quick dip of the Tonge

Back on the shelf got myself  a Unopend one

That's why we have carried on with the gusto/hello fresh stuff..

Yes it's more expensive, but we do one other shop a week and maybe nip out for bread/milk occasionally. Was proud of myself yesterday walking into Tesco for cough syrup, and coming out ... with just cough syrup. Probably spending about 50 quid a week on food (we have packed lunches), and then 50 quid on Gusto which does us for 5 of those nights.

We don't "struggle" for money, but my wife seems to have this ability to not be overly frugal unlike me. Boxes and boxes of kids clothes that have been worn once. Last time I bought some new clothes was about a year ago..

I think Hello fresh is fantastic.
value for money in my opinion, plus, you don’t get half packets and jars of different ingredients clogging up the cupboards as you get what you need and no wastage.

We’re  the same, hello fresh for main meals and one shop for other stuff now.
hello fresh may be more expensive but my overall shopping bill is lower because we are not out buying bits and bats constantly.

plus, the food is actually very good in my experience.

You filthy bastard.

Hello Fresh food is really good and I enjoy that feeling of cooking from scratch but we kept finding there would be at least one unused meal because of stuff cropping up in the evening

Only buy fish fingers once in a blue moon when I have a hankering for a fish finger barm but the absolute basic own brand has exactly the same fish content as the branded stuff

Did you wipe your arse with a Lemon floor wipe then put that back in the packet too?

The image of Lil whitt rimming a bottle of salad cream will now haunt me for years to come..

No more salad cream in this house...

The hot cross buns are pretty good too.

Had a veggie curry for tea so i'll no doubt be opening one of the beans and sausage for the kids.

The cereals are pretty much the only things that I can’t stand from Aldi/Lidl. Tasteless cardboard last time I tried them. Prefer Tesco own brand. Might have to try again as they may have changed their supplier

Oh, I was just talking about budget brands in general.

Fair enough yeah the bigger supermarkets are pretty much identical to the brands with a bit less sugar which I prefer.

Been offered 4.5% pay rise backdated to Jan 1st. £1250 consolidated lump sum, additional 2.5% from Jan 1, then another 2% from June 1. Now, we as a union are trying to get 11% for members- realistically that's not going to happen.

I think the offer is fair and whilst our own union is reluctant, think we should accept. Some colleagues are up in arms about this, and actively want to take industrial action. It's effectively 9%, plus a little Brucie Bonus- we'll negotiate again next year, and if interests go down, we'll be in a good place.

Things are tight now, but we'll see it through

£13,500 plus a Brucie bonus isn’t to be sniffed at.

Good luck whatever happens.

Good luck to folk who get pay rises

some are in jobs where they don’t happen or it’s literally a percent or 2, no striking bollocks

Our work announced last month they were giving everybody a 3% cost of living rise......and can you believe that some of them are complaining that either it's not enough, or even worse some are saying it's not fair because 3% for some is a lot less than it is for others.....the pricks.

All the internal and warehouse staff are also in line to get the full annual bonus of £6K each, becuase we've had a pretty good year......and a load of them are complaining about that, as they want it in their December wage, and not their January wage.

People just complain for the sake of it. If I was the MD, I'd be making sure that some of the bonus parameters aren't met (they can easily be manipulated, and generally are in favour of these people) in order to reduce that £6K, the ungrateful cunts

6k bonus wow!

our lads might get £250-500 and we’ve done reasonable

We got offered a 5% cost of living rise, spoke to the owner and asked for 7.5% for everyone in the business with a review in 3 months, he agreed one lad sent email to the owner complaining that I shouldn’t get the increase as I’m highest paid in the business, he also sent it to the office manager who sent it to me… let’s just say his cards are marked.
