Whitestar
Was decent in the 70s but that's the last time i sampled it, was never open as much as baldy afro's Chippy in the next block down which was equally decent. Used to have a sign in the window saying "Open Sundays but due to a borough by-law the sale of fish is prohibited" Weird. Is that still a thing??? So was that just in fish & chip shops? Could you say go to a supermarket or stall and buy fish?
Traf
Yeah, and you could buy fish from a Chinese, but not a chippy. You could buy porn mags, but not a Bible and so on.
Whitestar
LOL , actually (and to i bet this was late 90s or even early 00s) We wanted to buy some methylated spirit to clean some varnish brushes from a B&Q on a Sunday , girl on till says " Sorry you can't buy that on a Sunday" err why "in case you drink it" was the answer. The morrisons next door was selling wine cheaper.
Traf
The rules were bizarre. You could buy cream but not evaporated milk (or the other way round), you could buy bike spares or get your bike fixed, but couldn't buy a new one. Traf
And I think that an attempt to reform these laws was the only defeat Margaret Thatcher suffered in the Commons.

Go back a bit further and, in the case of shops, next to nowt was open on Sundays anyhow. Or Wednesday afternoon, or evenings.

Farrelli
All those European influences allowed standards to slip. The Tories want to bring back old weights and measures and signs in furlongs rather than kilometres. Hopefully they won’t stop there and we can get back to proper British values💣

Whitestar
No mate. It was a little toffee shop up some big steps, it was known locally as shop up steps or sally up steps. Not to be confused with a boozer.
