This test match is fantastic

But why play it in a half full stadium

After getting 40,000 for Aus v NZ at Anfield the other year you can understand why they’d fancy doing well with England there, but the game is pretty disjointed at the minute and the RFL make fuck all effort to engage new fans. Bloody great game, hoping for a whitewash when I’m at the game at Leeds next week.

What was today's attendance?

Just over 26,000

Didn’t help that it was initially Saturday 5.30. Then Saturday 2.30. Then a few months later somebody realised Everton were at home on the Saturday so it got moved to the Sunday. We’d had a minibus full ready for the Saturday but in the end only 3 of the 16 went to the game today.

RL World Club Challenge.  Ours trying to compete with the Aussies. Every dog has it's day, but what's the point?

Pissing into the wind comes to mind.

Thought Wigan made a decent fist of it in the second half but they were always going to be up against it after being caught in the headlights early on.

I’m just pissed off that I had Roosters -12 at evens.

So then....

Widnes can only play for 39 minutes.

Wigan only turn it on when they concede a few.

Salford are shit.

Leigh are in a right old mess.

It’s not Warrington’s year.

Rumours are rife that Widnes will not pay the wages tomorrow following the collapse of the potential investors... Just in the same way we defaulted on our commitments but survived, fingers crossed Widnes will pull through, a RL club with an incredible history!

This is what happens when you let people blind fans with stupid community shit.

We are in a bad way. Can’t see Gelling sticking around for this. Sadly a large proportion of our fans are too thick to realise we need money.

Fingers crossed the Dr comes swooping in and moves us to Liverpool

We are fucked pal.

Its what happens when people take money out of the club for no good reason. this has happened before and we went bust. we go again.

its a shame but such is life.

I wish Widnes well, gutted to see a stalwart of the game struggle like this when all the RFL are focussed on ensuring Toronto and NYC have thriving teams. Probably best taking the hit now and having a couple of seasons in the lower leagues then coming back stronger

Is this because the game will die if they don't promote these new teams in new territories?  -  if so, you can see why they wouldn't be overly fussed if they can grow the game

To be honest, I don't know if Toronto get 50 or 50,000 people for their games - I'm assuming they're seen as potential cash cows, hence them being focused on.

Might it, realistically, become ever more of an international affair, and eventually have less than half the top division having UK based teams? - could that be a plan?

Never knew it was so bad for them. When Widnes were ripping up trees in the 70s and 80s I followed them. Mainly because they played in Wanderers colours. And they had a big ox of a forward who's name i never knew. Actually went to a Challenge Cup Final. Hope they get sorted out.

The game at home is on its knees, declining attendances, clubs living beyond their means and an over reliance on benefactors to keep clubs afloat so from a financial perspective not dissimilar to lower league football. In a desperate attempt to broaden the base the RFL are looking to grow the game internationally but in my opinion when your core offer is struggling the last thing you do is focus your attention away from sorting out these issues and look to build a game in Toronto and NYC. We now have Leigh drifting into the wilderness, Widnes likely to be liquidated and only one SL (Leeds) that is financial solvent without outside investment. I have studied much of what Leeds do in terms of its community engagement and I and others are looking to replicate that model at Salford.

Toronto are funded by an Australian business man and have no salary cap so immediately have an advantage. They are rumoured to have offered $5m to tempt Sonny Bill Williams there yet they still owe Salford £20k in transfer funds for Gareth O'Brien transferred over a year ago, how is that allowed to happen? They get crowds of 7-9k but there is no RL structure in Canada so they will continue to parachute players in until they can build the grassroots which will take two decades to put in place with schools and community clubs.

There is so much wrong with the sport from an administrative perspective it is difficult to work out where the sport goes from here but what is clear is that the heartland clubs, in my opinion, need to be the priority and with proper governance we might have a chance to save the game. The next SKY deal is due in 2021 so lots will ride on that.

Big Jim Mills?

And Kieron O'Loughlin (Owen Farrell's grandad) played for Widnes in the finals of 1982 (losing a replay to Hull FC) and 1984 (beating his native Wigan, for whom Sean Edwards became the youngest player in a final).

Might be Mills. In my minds eye he was round and going bald.

This is what gets me. The RFL is the worst ran set up going. Fat Nige creamed more money than the sports top players for doing fuck all. The sky coverage has improved this year but its been shite for years. it is used to fill the gaps football leaves in the summer which then stops clubs from building a fan base as you can play anytime Thursday to Monday with very little warning.

Widnes have been swindled by the owners however as it is their club i guess its theirs to do with as they see fit.

James Rule and Munson are absolute conmen and have used a shit community marketing gimmick to pull the wool over the mongalongs eyes. #beatthescrum is probably the most embarrassing thing going.

Even now though people don't want investors the Dr coming in which is mental. be interesting to see what happens when we do go bump as Halton council won't have much use for the stadium going forward so thats likely to become housing. The fact we don't own the ground makes us a very unattractive proposition Hopefully we survive it in some form as i have got some great friends through going to the rugby. i do feel we are in a situation though where we will have to go and play elsewhere in front of 500 to go forward.
