On the infrequent times I went to OT, I always seemed to bump into Dennis! Seem to recall getting a 3-0 drubbing and he was in the paddock where we were opposite side to where the players come out. Me and a mate went to Gigg Lane to watch Franky play for Tranmere in the early 80's. Pulled up at the front of the ground thinking that it was even quieter than we thought it would be, found out from a bloke who was doing some work at the front of his house that it had been called off. We seemed to sign or produce good strikers in the 70s, Lee and Davies just out of my range, but Fletcher, Gary Jones, JB, Stevie Taylor, Whatmore were all excellent players. Frank was the dogs bollocks though, had everything, ignored by England along with a number of other highly skillful personalities. Just wish we could have stayed a couple of more seasons. I'll have to try to find it. From memory Ian Greaves came back to manage the 78 side as well.

Nicholson said at the time that he was really pleased with the turnout for a midweek game in mid season. Vernon Allatt scored 2 goals that night and a rather chubby John Byrom missed a sitter at the other end.
Johnnyrotten
Vernon Allatt was surely one of the worst strikers we've ever had. if he scored 2 in that testimonial I think that dates it as 82/83 rather than 83/84. McGovern mysteriously signed him on a free from Halifax, I'm sure it was to play in Div 2 in 82. The only time I saw him was a friendly at Morecambe and that was his level, I'm sure he didnt play one league or cup game for us.

Remember wanting Wigan to win that day (felt no animosity at the time and obviously to support Per). How times change.

Johnnyrotten
Cheers for that. I checked the programme for the home game before the testimonial to see if its advertised. All it gets is a listing in the "next home games" bit. No effort whatsoever to influence people to attend with promises of who's expected to play etc! If I'd known Best and Worthy were coming I'd definitely have gone, even though we were in the middle of a terrible run of form and gates down to 5,500.
