Missus has a nice Audi on a stupidly cheap lease she bagged when Covid hit. It went for the 1st service and they tried everything from tyres, brakes and brake fluid to make extra. Cunts would have made a fortune for absolutely no reason as it had done fuck all miles. Know a certain German car dealership in Bolton tried telling a pensioned that he needed 4 new tyres as they only had 7mm of tread depth on them which was "a bit risky".. My dad spent 40 years doing air con and refrigerator gases. The older gases didn't, but they caused issues when they leaked (r22). The new ones don't last but are eco friendly(er). I have been in the automotive Air Con business for 40 yrs . I have also been on the industrial Refrigeration business for 48 yrs . Unless there is a leak , the system will carry on working. ( gas wise ). Yes the compressor can fail or the condenser fan on a larger unit . The gas does not deteriate . It's a massive con. We have company vehicles leased , I have lost count of the number of times , when they go in for a service and we get a phone call saying the air con needs a re- gas when they go in for a service. My reply is always the same " hang on I will be right down " Get there , either ( ford's, toyota, VW , or BMW , all main dealers ) Or Kwik fit . Hi mate , show me what's wrong and where the leak is . ( BEARING in mind I wear a company shirt with our badge on the front and a/c specialist + industrial Refrigeration on the back . 19 times out of 20 . But all systems have to be gas tight . It's why the fgas regulations exist . Every system over a certain size has to have regular leak tests . These have to be documented. The old freon gases R22 , R502 ( the "bad " ones ) which are now illegal over here but the chinks and Indians still produce them . There is an massive illegal trade in Refrigeration gases . A 60kg cylinder of gas used to cast 10 yrs ago £350 ,now its £3780 . Garages charge a fortune, a car air con gas charge is no more the 32ounces. You do not top up a system, what's left is decantented , the system is then pressurised with OFN , this is used to find the leak. Usually with soapy water . The leak is repaired , system vacuumed out then a fresh charge added.

I have been told that refrigerant changes properties over time due to porous seals , natural contamination and natural loss, it made sense to me but your experience and explanation says that’s shit , so what makes it work better when it’s changed ? It's got a miniscule leak , but over time obviously the loses a percentage of gas , places cannot be arsed mending the leak . So squirt abit in . System obviously improves but the leak is still there .Remember it's only a small charge 32, ounces .

Comes as a system. Minus the connecting pipework. Wrong time of year to order one . Wait till winter . Prepare to say " how much " when the guy tells you the cost of the gas.
