  • If he was a new signing and we hadn’t seen him up close, we would be wanking ourselves silly after that half, about signing a player who seems to have it all at this level; vision, energy, box-to-box,

All fair points that you make, I think he deserves more than 3 games to get us challenging for the top, especially as it is his first real crack at having a decent transfer budget, time will tell.

  • Most men with dogs didnt see 3 in midfield

well i certainly did  Arfield pushed up but Dempsey stayed behind and linked up well with Thomason and Matete

Maybe yours was a guide dog

The fluidity we need- midfielders interchanging, defending and attacking as necessary.

When it's difficult to pick the exact formation out, then they've done something right.

We played the same formation, didn't we?

Yeh we did, exactly the same.

I can see why folk are confused when Dempsey and Arfield start with Tomo and Matete.

But however you describe it; box midfield, 2 number 10’s, 3 up front, Dempsey and Arfield were playing where Collins and McAtee were Saturday.

They looked better in those positions to be honest, however this very much needs to be asterisked with the poor opposition tonight.

Agree with that, play the same team Saturday. Will give the ones who played tonight a real confidence boost, and the ones who don’t will have to fight to get picked.

I’d bring Baxter & Collins in but the rest yes, he needs to be ruthless Evatt I’m not digging Sheehan out but he’s one who hasn’t performed so far

Very comfortable win, but if you want to make some money, get on Shrewsbury for relegation. They are seriously poor. Some good performances never the less, Dempsey as got to be in the staring line up.

I honestly didn’t think Shrewsbury were that bad.

They did some neat passing and there was good movement from them at times.

They didn’t seem to have much up top though, hence no end product.

I have confidence in Either keeper but Baxter is still the one with the shirt. Would not change the back 3 from tonight

Firino over Toal at present  JDC and Desmond at wingbacks.  Matete, Thompson and Dempsey in midfield.

Then Two from Charles, Collins, McAtee and Vic

Every man and his dog can see we are better balanced with those three in midfield.

Also noticed Johnston got the ball tonight from Smallwood and not Santos...I do not think that was coincidence.

Well done Bolton and Evatt tonight, but is he strong enough to pick something like on Saturday

I noticed your point about Johnston getting the ball from Southwood too masi and it seemed much more fluid and I don’t think it was a coincidence either.

Difference being more energy in the team whereas when Sheehan plays it’s slower and being part of 2 in midfield it doesn’t suit him for me no place for him going forward with this system only as a substitution.

I think a fit and in form Dempsey might well be the missing link in Evatt’s masterplan.

Play him in those 2 10s at the top of the ‘box’ and it all becomes very fluid as TMGJ says - 3 in midfield one minute and then 3 breaking forward the next. We don’t have anyone that has that engine and ability to cover ground like he does.

I like @Casinos suggestion for just Baxter and Collins to replace Southwood and Arfield (Toal and Sheehan just because they are out of form and nobody should be undroppable), but I doubt we’ll see it. Whatever happens, if Dempsey is fit enough then he has to start on Saturday for me if we want a balanced system.

Slight bugbear. We still leave opposition player unmarked on the edge of our box when defending corners.

Nearly cost us at the end of the first half.

Tutu much better on the left , plenty running at defenders from him .Caveat they were shite .

But then again shite opposition hasn’t stopped us losing in the past !

We've been here before.

A couple of midfielders pushing forward, or a couple of out and out strikers.

Far more balanced, than with simply 2 out and out midfielders.

But it's the same formation, though

It was never a three man midfield

Definitely.  We basically didn't need to give defending much thought tonight.  I  bet if Collins and McAtee had played tonight they would have had a field day, with little requirement to get involved defensively.  You never know it might be similar v Exeter on Saturday (I'm prepared to be very wrong about that).  But Huddersfield is a completely different proposition and the formation/personnel we had at Charlton would be overpowered again.

No more a 3 than it was a 4!

Can’t argue about us having more energy with those 4 in.

And I might be changing my mind and going with those who saw the partnership with Matete and Tomo bearing fruit.

However I still think there’ll be games when Sheehan has a big part to play

It was but Dempsey & Arfield played intelligently & fully understood their roles.

Yeah may do good to leave Sheehan, toal and one or two others on the bench, specially if we can go on a decent run. Maybe a few have got complacent. Buts let’s enjoy tonight, it was really refreshing.

Squad game and Sheehan will have a part to play but not as a 2 man midfield he’s not mobile enough he needs players with energy around him so he can play his passing game.

100% Sheehan will start on Saturday

No doubt he will big surprise if he doesn’t ! and Toal as well !

Regarding "same team bar Collins and Baxter", I'm prepared to get shot down for being wrong again but no way Schon gets dropped already.  Questions will be asked of IE's recruitment if he's spent £700k or whatever on a player that's getting replaced by a player on his wrong side.

On another note, most of us gave up on this cup when Williams blasted his penalty wide.  Big thanks to Mansfield for missing 3 consecutive pens, not sure when we were last in the 3rd round?

Won’t be long until Cogley is consigned to the bench at best, huge weak link in an otherwise decent side tonight.

Much better tonight. Played with a far better tempo and the wingbacks really pushed on.

More of the same on Saturday please.

Schon is learning the role

I think he shouldve learned a lot tonight..not least how to run at the defender

Hes had 3 or 4 games, now he knows what to work on

He will get another go, soon enough

Indeed.  First 5 minutes, set piece headed well clear by Santos - there you go Shrews, have another go, we won't trouble you by putting you under any pressure, have another cross.

But I noticed they gave us the same opportunity too, its just baffling.  If you cross the ball from open play you get one chance to deliver quality, if its from a set piece you get to practise it a couple of times!

Yes Toal will definitely start Saturday.

Which were outweighed by the times he did .

Im not saying he is bad , just that he isnt good enough to be a regular starter . I dont believe he was bought to play every game and flopped it lucky last season due to injuries .

Desmond on the right , fully up to speed and JDC doesnt get a look in and used as cover.
