  • If he was a new signing and we hadn’t seen him up close, we would be wanking ourselves silly after that half, about signing a player who seems to have it all at this level; vision, energy, box-to-box,

All fair points that you make, I think he deserves more than 3 games to get us challenging for the top, especially as it is his first real crack at having a decent transfer budget, time will tell.

  • Most men with dogs didnt see 3 in midfield

If you cannot see Matete is streets ahead of Sheehan you need to go and watch Rugby.....

Not on this performance . better second half but that just papers over the cracks of a poor first half .

Not up to speed yet.

He looks way better on the left than Schon .....

Do you just say shite to get a reaction like on the EFL division boards ?

Schon is learning the role

I think he shouldve learned a lot tonight..not least how to run at the defender

Hes had 3 or 4 games, now he knows what to work on

He will get another go, soon enough

I thought he was signed as a LWB used to that role?  I get that's he's settling into a new country and team, but so is Desmond, I would have thought he'd have more to learn than Schon at LWB given he's right footed?

I've no strong feelings on who plays, they are both fine, but I just can't see IE dropping one of his big signings already especially when Williams is still an option (unless he's off).

The date for the 3rd round isn't even settled, we could be playing 17th/18th Sep or 24th/25th.

Presume Sky will let us know in due course.

Dont forget tutu knows england

I dunno where schon will end up, but ive seen nowt yet that he should be a definite pick

He could well be a world beater in a month

I have confidence in Either keeper but Baxter is still the one with the shirt. Would not change the back 3 from tonight

Firino over Toal at present  JDC and Desmond at wingbacks.  Matete, Thompson and Dempsey in midfield.

Then Two from Charles, Collins, McAtee and Vic

Every man and his dog can see we are better balanced with those three in midfield.

Also noticed Johnston got the ball tonight from Smallwood and not Santos...I do not think that was coincidence.

Well done Bolton and Evatt tonight, but is he strong enough to pick something like on Saturday

Based on what ?  our strongest defensive 3 is clearly Johnston , Santos,  Toal.

Schon and desmond at wings if we continue to play that way , Midfield of Gt , Dempsey and Sheehan . Matete is not up to speed yet . Cant drop collins , cant drop Dion , Cant drop McAtee.  Otherwise sacrifice the wings and put another body in midfield which would be Matete or arfield.

A fit and on form Dempsey reminds me of Stu Holden, albeit a poor mans version

Matete not up to speed? only midfielder who’s shown any signs of driving with ball

You know we can only play 11

you have 5 at back, 3 in midfield and 3 up front 😂👍😘

Professional job in the end and we can’t draw Plymouth so all good in my book.

But it's the same formation, though

It was never a three man midfield

Call it as you want, it was an entirely different approach, with more defensive cover, both from Matete replacing Sheehan, and the other two midfielders getting involved as necessary.

My first thoughts on seeing the team line up, was a 5-4-1 with midfielders supporting Charles as necessary. This fits in with your box idea.

3 strikers don't achieve that, even though it's not their fault.

Difficult to judge Tutu and Schon, given that there was far more solidity and control in midfield tonight.

The Hungarian would almost certainly been more effective than at Charlton with that level of protection.

Schon is tidy and better at crossing than Desmond, but he cannot or has not the pace to get down the line  and beat a player.  If you think that is shite fair enough....It is my opinion no more

Guess anything i put you like to go against.........So i will give you a rational reply

Toal is out of form and in my opinion and it is only that.  Firino comes in and takes that shirt until he either looks out of Form or is injured

You say Matete is not up to speed i think he is and that run second half is something not in Sheehans locker. Again give him the start and the same applies

Dempsey again deserves to start on Saturday

So that leaves two from Charles, Collins, McAtee and Vic to start

Or we can go back to the team that started against Charlton and struggle against Exeter and get overpowered by a decent Huddersfield.

Evatt has some thinking this next 10 days

I've not seen Tutu apart from a few bits as a sub so he may be way faster, but I thought Schon seemed pretty fast the games I've seen him. Against Wrexham he was against that very pacy Revan and they looked similar.

The bit I'd say Schon hasn't been good at yet is end product, and he seems like more of a full back to me than a wing back. So if Tutu is more natural as a wingback then yeah Evatt should make the change.

Same for all the other good performances last night. If they played better than the players on Saturday v Charlton Evatt needs to have the guts to rotate.

Schön was winger in Hungary, so you’d think he’s more suited to a wing back role than full back.

Thought he played well second half but not great first 45 - caught on the ball at least a couple of times and didn't seem to offer much otherwise.

Tomo was exceptional, and there's an argument to make that Matete's presence - including first half - freed him up to take more responsibility.

I wouldn't mind us starting with the same 2  Saturday.

(I also wouldn;t mind Sheehan keeping his spot)

This new formation / approach

Clearly 3-4-3

From what I've seen, it works better away from home when 2 of the front 3 are less attack minded and can operate in midfield as required, but are capable of getting forward

And then you have good options off the bench

And at home, I get it being more attack minded, on another day we'd have beaten Wrexham when the keeper is MOTM and never looked like losing

It just appears too top heavy at the moment because he's starting McAtee as opposed to more of a Lolos or CMG type player and leaving two in the middle seems vulnerable

I think that is what needs working on, finding the right balance when we go on the offensive and in turn getting the balance right in the middle

Think the only real mistake that's been made so far was going with the attack minded front 3 at Charlton, and even then, the goals we conceded came from stupid mistakes and probably not reflective of tactics

Work in progress

It needs to yield at least 7 points from the next 3 games though I don't see any reason to not expect 9

I thought while it was essentially still 3-4-3 it worked better as Dempsey and Arfield were disciplined off the ball and came back to ferret around for the ball and check breakaways, helping Tomo and Matete a bit.

They were also a bit narrower, allowing JDC in particular and Tutu to an extent to get forward more than in the previous games (helped  also by Shrews having a couple of wide players who didn't do much tracking back). That narrower approach from Arfield and Dempsey also helped Charles a bit in that they were closer to him.

Matete didn't do anything earth shattering but was effectively forming a double screen and pivot with Tomo, and as has been said, freeing him up a bit to drive forward and play incisive passes, which he did well.

At the back, Forino did fairly well in his defending against modest opponents, bit careless on the ball a few times though, only one game mind, with a few he might well iron that out.

Tutu or Schon is a flip of a coin job off what I've seen of them both. Schon ought to be better at LWB and Tutu be challenging JDC on right but hard to assess at minute

I agree with that, I thought we were signing a winger converted to a wingback, but he currently looks like a full back being asked to convert to LWB, the attacking part of his game isn't evident yet.  We'll see how it develops but given the transfer fee I think he'll be learning on the job and the others will compete for the right hand side and to replace him as sub occasionally.

My thoughts as well..

Cup games are those games where you allow players to "get a game" if they come in and impress then you consider playing them,

However

It wasn't a minnow team, they're in our league and it was an ideal opportunity to try something new.. I can't see why Dempsey shouldn't be starting or Forino as you say, they proved themselves. Toal has been off his game for a while, hoping he hasn't "peaked".

Something has to be done, as GJ is playing as well as I recall him playing but we're still not right at the back for now, then these players who are dropped have to earn that place back.

GWD4_lEXwAAT9jr?format=png&name=small

haven't read back, but from the bits we've seen of Dempsey so far this season he's been one of our better players

starts for me

Wait, they're seeding the league cup now?  hahaha
