matty2094 Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Changed my mind after thinking about it.. These 2 are decent squad signings IMO.
HomerJay Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 I've not seen any news today, are these 2 actually signed or just rumoured?
SpiritofBurnden Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 That's last november. Can't be arsed doing the sums but players that have left will have significantly reduced the wagebill. We are trying to reduce our wage bill and that will continue. Which part of that did you not understand?
Rembrandt Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Jeffren on left Eagles in the same boat as Rodrigo and Weiss Mears to fight for a place at the back. Reo Coker/Muamba and Mark Davies until Holden is back Reo Coker and Holden Muamba and Reo Coker Muamba and Holden Holden and Mark Davies and Reo Coker/Muamba in a 4-5-1 against the big teams away from home. And Pratley ??
Traf Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 We are trying to reduce our wage bill and that will continue. Which part of that did you not understand? Perhaps the players who have left ie Elmander & Taylor were being paid more than Mears & Eagles will be.
birch-chorley Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 We are trying to reduce our wage bill and that will continue. Which part of that did you not understand? The part where signing two players from Burnley is meant to help in reducing the wage bill. Not signing them at all would reduce the wage bill. Tyrone mears is another average RB just like GS and SR. We now have 3 average RB that is not a good way to reduce a wage bill.
HomerJay Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 We are trying to reduce our wage bill and that will continue. Which part of that did you not understand? Continue til when? Til the players are paying us?

That's the second time you've said that. It makes as little sense as the first time.
RUREADY2ROLL Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Continue til when? Til the players are paying us? I used to pay subs to play We should pay when we win and they pay back when they lose
HomerJay Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 (edited) http://boards.footymad.net/forum.php?tno=104&fid=297&sty=2&act=1&mid=2116846407&page=1 Lets get real and move them on. I confess to being in the "Mears is great going forward but cant defend" brigade and am similarly suspect about elements of Eagles's game. ? 2.95m for Eagles is a very good price. Surprised even Coyle would go as far as ? 50K for Mears though neither are good enough for the premiership I think we saw in our Premier League season that Eagles fell well short - remember we won 1 of the 20 games he started He's a very good, if also very inconsistent, Championship player. I'm a big Eagles fan, but in reality he does have far too many games where he simply isn't at it. I'm also a Mears fan, but although he can attack, he is pretty suspect at the other end. and these are 2 of their best players!!! oh dear. Edited July 23, 2011 by HomerJay
SpiritofBurnden Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 http://boards.footymad.net/forum.php?tno=104&fid=297&sty=2&act=1&mid=2116846407&page=1 I hope to Christ this is not true...are we really that desperate for money... Hugely disappointing if true. Can't keep players who want to leave, but it would leave us very short. If true very dissapointing. In my opinion along with Bikey the only two players that show premier league potential. If this is true and at such a low price then we might as well give up now, unless there are replacements available for less than 3million. I would have expected more than that for Eagles alone I'll be gutted if this happens, but I understand why it'd be and I'd back Eddie with whatever money he gets from it. I've not had a drink for a week but i'm very tempted to get pished and climb a tree at this news... I would rather both of them go for free next year rather than accept only 3million! if true, very low fee for two of our best players, year left or not. Come on Burnley, we don't need to sell our best players. I hate to put a downer on things like this, but they are quite simply 2 of our most important players when it comes down to creating something - as in goals, Eagles especially. I really can't see us being anywhere near challenging if we were to lose these 2 Id be guttdd if they left loosing our most consistent player in mears and our only player that can create something out of nothing in eagles. surely the gamble of keeping these two and pushing for the prem again outweighs 3 mill
onlyoneawalker Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Where have I gave Coyle grief over Jefferen? Where have I barracked Coyle for signing two English players? I merely said they had played a part in Burnleys relegation. I havnt expressed an opinion on the signings as yet as they have not happened I didn't say you did read my post aimed at casino and homer
superkev Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 The part where signing two players from Burnley is meant to help in reducing the wage bill. Not signing them at all would reduce the wage bill. Tyrone mears is another average RB just like GS and SR. We now have 3 average RB that is not a good way to reduce a wage bill. Average right backs are all we can expect. You could say that most fullbacks are average bar the top players in those positions. I couldn't name that many class fullbacks
tyldesley_white Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 To be honest I am a bit gutted with this, I am a big fan of Coyle and have been right behind the work he has been doing with the squad since he arrived. i.e Trimming down the number of players who just are not good enough to have a smaller leaner squad of better quality players. I think these 2 players are not prem quality and will at best be bench warmers but no better than Steinsson / Ricketts / Matt Taylor / Petrov. The standard of players I would like us to go for are.... Warnock, Onuha, Corluka, Jeffran, Reo Coker, SWP, Bellamy, Sturridge, Welbeck, Park Chu-Young etc (obviously not all of them but gives an idea of quality) Mears and Eagles dont fit the bill for me or what i thought OC was trying to do. OC keeps saying he need 3 or 4 more, I hope these 2 are not included in that as they do not make our first team better. I stopped reading at Bellamy

I couldn't name that many class fullbacks Maybee but we already have 2 average RB so I dont see the need for another, That Williams lad from boro might have been a better shout than mears IMO as he is younger and can cover different positions. If we are looking for squad players they need to be able to cover a few positions like Ricketts can. The way i see it we have got rid of Taylor and Ward and are looking to bring in Eagles and Mears for about the same transfer fee / wages. I dont think the squad or starting 11 is any better off. Six of one half a dozen of another for me. Very happy with Reo Coker, Nedum Onuha and Jeffran should any of them come off.
Didledee Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 I'd rather have an Eagles come off the bench than a Cohen, Taylor, etc.
Theboybell Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 I'd rather have an Eagles come off the bench than a Cohen, Taylor, etc. Based on what?
Didledee Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 (edited) Based on what? Based on on the floor football ability, Eagles although inconsistent can provide some craft, some variety, has it in him to do something special. Jeffran and Eagles, Reo Coker, I can see Coyle's thinking with this, exciting players and players who allow creative players to do their thing. You know I'd like to see away from home Bolton do a Brazil from the last World Cup, like Melo and Silva as holders, and the likes of Robinho, Bastos, Alvez, Maicon showing their abilty. birch-chorley Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 I'd rather have an Eagles come off the bench than a Cohen, Taylor, etc. You may be right with Eagles, the fact that he is versitile and can play across the middle is a big benefit as is the fact that he is only 25 and he did score 15 goals in 48 appearances last season so although I remain hesitant I can agree that he has potential to be a good signing. I just cannot see it with Tyrone Mears though, he is 28 years old and no better than what we have IMO. If we get him he will probably start as first choice RB but will soon be replaced by either GS or SR (when fit) due to errors. I dont think these two where OC first choice signings though or I think he would have gone for them sooner to have pre season in USA. I think he has gone for them as the likes of SWP and Williams have not come off.
Arnold Jackson Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 (edited) I dont think these two where OC first choice signings though or I think he would have gone for them sooner to have pre season in USA. I agree with this and as I rate Owen Coyle as a fantastic manager and good judge of a footballer, I am dismayed at the lack of money he has had to sign players thus far during his reign. The previous manager bought many players with fees ranging from 3.5 million to 8 million and so far Owen seems to have been limited to free transfers and players upto 2 million. Just how we have improved is a miracle in my opinion. Come on you Whites! Edited July 23, 2011 by Arnold Jackson
Guest bwfcdan Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 I'd rather have an Eagles come off the bench than a Cohen, Taylor, etc. I agree. But i'd rather have Gregor Rasiak at RB than Mears
superkev Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 I agree. But i'd rather have Gregor Rasiak at RB than Mears I'd rather have Rasiak than steinnson so mears must be an improvement
