Casino Posted September 22, 2013 Posted September 22, 2013 When has it been as worse than this? and what was the catalyst/the start of things turning around.  Obviously results, but what changed things for the better? new manager? a player stepping up?  whatever it was, i didn't stop going  think on Quote

Tonge moor green jacket Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 A lot depends upon your age at the time and how you change etc. The 'dark days' of the 4th division were dark because of Aldershot that put us there- Felgate on one leg with the gods conspiring against us, and Scarborough for the rude awakening. However, I also believe Neal helped install some good foundations for the recovery, and for the next few years, the romance of following the whites and the memories are second to none. Wrexham away will NEVER be beaten. Still puts a tingle down the spine just thinking about it. Also great trips to Bournemouth, Brentford, Orient, Swansea, Southampton, Fulham et. in the lower leagues, at a time when you've got bit of money in your pocket and no great responsibilities- absolutely amazing times.  However the infrastructure we have now is light-years away from the mess we had then. So it really depends how you look at it. Don't agree that I'd prefer to be challenging in a lower league than be in the premier league, because while being successful down there produces great times it also brings promotion. And I don't believe we (or any other club) punched above our weight. We were where we were on merit through good management and bloody hard work. These things do seem to come in cycles though, so just hope we're not going to slump big style. The biggest disappointment for me is the apparent mercenary attitude of some of the modern players, moreover even with fitness/diet science etc to help them, I don't believe many of them are that good- never seen a better finisher than Walker, his partnership with SJM the best I've known, even ten bellies Kelly- couldn't run, but had great control, could see a  pass it and create things. Current incumbents don't realise how lucky they are; but for a number it may last chance saloon, because it's unlikely they'll get anything better Quote

Albert Anchovy Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 BRAVO Â Seconded, It was amazing how far you could stretch a YTS wage back in the early 80's following the Whites. Quote

Estupendo Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 For those young ones experiencing a slump for the first time, it may be quite an education. They can start to see who amongst the support are those still turning up.Especially when they are fed a line by some about being there at Scarborough, etc. Hopefully this isn't my third time following the whites in the third tier since I was a tot but already I am getting an idea about who would be turning up if this happens! Can't wait for the posts about being the bestest supporter now. That's not what I mean to refer to but if people think I do then think again. Quote
mannyroad vet Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Unfortunately I'm old enough to remember those bad days, I remember doing a sponsored walk to the pie eaters for a group called the "trotters revival" ,can't remember what year but I'm sure it was a boxing day match, and protesting against the warbys, back when protesting meant a riot cause we couldn't afford to fuck our bedsheets up, selling scratch cards for Des McBain and his merry group. Thing is we've been through worse, as fans, but we've been there, done that..and we're still here... This at the moment is hopefully just a blip and we will turn it around but if not we will still be here, harking back to the "good ol days" because that's what comes with being a Bolton fan Quote
Traf Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Trotters Revival started in 85. Â TR85, remember it well. Quote

gonzo Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 So in answer to the original question. Â Until we are organising fund raising walks and coach trips away to try and save the club from going under, this is nowhere near those dark days. Â A flutter with the lower depths in the championships is a walk in the park compared to that kind of stuff going on. Quote
