Can any of you good people recommend a good 40 year old malt? It's a friends 40th birthday soon, he likes a good whiskey so I though a combination of the two as a present.

Whiskey or whisky? (i.e Irish or Scotch). And does he prefer peated or non peated?

Anyhow, the expert says a 40 year old will be expensive and not necessarily that great. 2 x 20 year olds will be better

you've spoken to meldrew?

he'll recommend johnnie walker

No.

We have a library/whisky room at home. We have enough whisky to sail & sink the bloody titanic. And he makes me keep my gin in the kitchen.

If you bought me the finest peated whisky, I'd give it away, however my expert loves the stuff. This is his message to you

" Kin ell. That'll be pricey. Also, not necessarily great. Don't really know anything that old, off the top of my head - check the Whisky Bible... "

So, it's a case of checking the Bible later on.

The Glenfarcias 40yo gets 94/100 in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible, which is good, very good in fact, however you need to be sure it's not the freakishly disappointing 40 year old from last year.

So, yes, it's good unless it's part of the bad bottling.

Hadn't heard of a bad bottling. The reason I'd heard it's so cheap (if you can call £300 cheap for a bottle of booze) is that Glenfarclas had an unusual amount of 40 yr old casks available and hence released a lot of bottles on to the market. One for the (albeit well heeled) drinker rather than the collector.

Incapable. And he was busy at work (unusual, I know! ) when the question was first asked.

Not sure if it was a bad bottling or a bad bottle or a bad barrel that was reviewed in 2012, but Murray didn't rate it, however I can't check properly as I lent 2012 to someone & haven't yet had it returned.

Anyhow, it was a good spot for a 40yo, as he gave it a really good rating in 2013

Had a bottle of whyte and mackay bought for me this week. Not a whiskey drinker, but I can be.

You'd drink meths if somebody else was buying.
