leigh white Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 definitely tommo's testimonial and it was a combined Merseyside team we played, ended up 5-5.we had the division 2 trophy on show as well. pissed down and am sure it was a friday night. something like 22,000 was on. Looking back that sounds about right, it would be like us parading the 2nd Division trophy round Maine Rd before the game kicked off. Quote
Mounts Kipper Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Everton for me probably the only time I cried after a football match that night. Quote
miamiwhite Posted October 27, 2013 Author Posted October 27, 2013 while rothmans is the bible, i'm with you   my rothmans reference was to the 42,000 capacity for the 82/83 season but it still appears i'm wrong with it being 43,000  the 60,000 capacity up to 75/76 is one im still shocked by though. Burnden must have looked sparse in the late 60's/early 70's.  Villa park must have had a similar capacity in those days ?   i'm with mounts on the Everton match, only time i've ever cried after a game of foot the ball esp when a small pocket of Pabber's dads were signing ''Que Sera'' in the manny road wing stand.......twats Quote

Trotski Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Liverpool in Cup, first year they won it in 1965. Think Ian Callaghan got the winner. 57,000 (subject to Rothman's confirmation). Quote

Mounts Kipper Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Bigger crowd at Gigg Lane than Burnden?! I'm sure that Bolton would have had half the crowd at gigg lane. Quote

miamiwhite Posted October 28, 2013 Author Posted October 28, 2013 They were promoted that year   I'd imagine so based on that attendance, still pretty impressive though.  I wonder if that was the match they got promoted ? Quote

birch-chorley Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Wtf was the wing stand if it was not the manny road stand? Â Also who in their right mind ever sat in the burnden stand? Quote
Traf Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 The wing stand was the end of the manny road stand nearest to the lever end, it was angled slightly and was thus a wing. Quote
Baba O'Riley Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 From the programme home to Coventry Nov 1978: Â Typical, not answering the question about the lack of cover over the Embankment. My Grandad always insisted it was due to the risk of sparks from the railway setting fire to a wooden roof, although my Dad who worked on the railways in the 1950's understood it was due to the ownership of the land behind the terrace belonging to the rail company rather than the club, so we couldn't build on it, or at least wouldn't pay to do so. Quote
jules_darby Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Rough maths in my head  That would have 27k-ish without the embankment at all  Say 3k-4k on there post Normid  We're talking a 30k plus ground??  Capacity was 22k-ish post that wasn't it  Guessing they reduced the amount they'd "allow" on the terraces, but seems a lot of difference to me  Or am I being my usual thick self and have missed summat?? Quote
Casino Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Also who in their right mind ever sat in the burnden stand?  sat there with my mum n dad for a few years  we used to park on bromwich street so miles more convenient Quote
