Commonwealth Games

Hampden Park has a 'one-off' track for these games, but was often used for athletics on the grass track.

Scotland v England v Ireland triangular internationals were held there in various years from 1914 to 1930.

Great Britain v Finland was held there in 1935 - the first GB home meeting outside London.

But most surprisingly the International Cross Country Championship (in the days when it was England v Scotland v Ireland v Wales v France) was held from Hampden Park in 1922. It started at half time in a Queens Park v Celtic match with the first mile on the grass track before going out for 57 minutes over mixed country before returning to finish on the track. It was England's first ever defeat (by France).

The Glasgow Police Sports was a major 'open international' meeting which rotated between the 3 major Glasgow football grounds until at least 1956. Incidentally, when Hampden Park opened on its current site in 1903 they were the 3 largest football grounds in the world.

Watching this mornings Aussie news shows was a delight. Only one made grudging mention of England being 8 golds clear of them in the table. The others concentrated on Sally Pearson 'streaking in' in her heat and the fallout behind the scenes about the bloke who criticised her for not joining the pre games get together (who has now been sent home).

They also mention some 'Sheila' had also just won her heat.

Surprisingly, no mention of the medal tally on all but one. Pleasure which is one degree away from total satisfaction. Even the non sport missus yelped with delight at the medal tally report

Massive Hibs supporters tune played during massive Hearts supporter, Eilidh Child's lap of honour:

Needless to say, she wasn't impressed when she was asked about it during her post race interview.

Penalty shootout coming up in the women's hockey semi-final between England and New Zealand.

England win 3-1 to set up a final with the Aussies!

Great shootout. Players have to dribble from just inside their own half and try to score within 8 seconds. England's goalie just flattened one of their players rather than bothering to save the shot.

She won bronze in her last ever bout. Check out the photo caption in the Bolton News. It gets more like Viz every day:
