Carlos Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 I didn't want to say in the Tom Finney thread but that generation of England players was poor, we talk about greats, they were just great men. Puskas and Di Stephano were a class above. Quote

Carlos Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Given a free pick of players, I'd have Messi behind CRonaldo and Zlatan. Quote
Zico Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Aye, zlatan is #1 for me, consistently scored at every level and won plenty Not scored in all his cl games against English teams though, so he's marked as a bottler or something Quote
superjohnmcginlay Posted February 20, 2014 Author Posted February 20, 2014 I've watched barca win 6-0 on TV passing it into the net and barely raised my heart beat. Watch a 6 nil prem game and it's a different story. ! I remember a 6-0 prem game on a Sunday where It wasn't pleasant at all Quote

Garrp Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 The best thing about zlatan for me One of the big tournaments, might have been euro 2004. Martin O'neill in the studio said zlatan was the most overrated player he'd ever seen, or something along those lines. Half the country copied him and thought it was cool to have the same opinion and they'd look shrewd. I think they thought they were the only ones who had heard it. Loads on this board, load of my mates. Fucking well funny Quote

My view technically excellent, don't think the pace of our game would bring the best out of him he's basically a Berbatov type player but better. Messi on the other hand could play in the premiership. Quote
DazBob Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Re Zlatan, I'm certainly man enough to admit I got him wrong. I'd seen his clips on youtube, I'd seen his incredible scoring stats ... but whenever I did see him (admittedly not very often) I just didn't get it. He just looked lazy as fuck and never seemed to do anything. It seems now though, whenever I see him he looks like an absolute world beater. He's now one of my favourite players. The fact that he constantly refers to himself in the third person and, without doubt, has the biggest ego in world football makes him even more likeable. Quote
Carlos Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Zlatan would get booed if he played for us, and that is a fucking fact. Quote
Zico Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 'that' goal against England went a good way to dispelling that theory aye, but he's been doing shit like that for years, just not against english clubs Wonder why he's never played in England? My view technically excellent, don't think the pace of our game would bring the best out of him he's basically a Berbatov type player but better. Messi on the other hand could play in the premiership. wenger wanted to offer him a trial in 2002, but his agent was having none of it then could've joined city in 2011 but went to milan instead as city didn't have the tradition and all that http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/427362/Ibrahimovic-reveals-how-he-nearly-joined-Arsenal-AND-Man-City-while-lauding-Mourinho and for old times sake Quote
Didledee Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 (edited) Even though he's on ignore, I saw Elson's post just now 'cos I wasn't logged in, my signature was done when Lee was brilliant and it's just a jokey thing and I've tried to change it but I don't have permission, so don't blame me. and Snoop, my comment about the star rating was because I believe you think the WC is the biggest stage and is the only factor in judging a player, however Messi won't play players who he's not done before or who are better than your South American, La Liga and Champions League players What's better scoring in the Champions League,v City or scoring in the WC v say Iraq or Trinidad (examples) means nothing and for Stevie, if you read my post properly, you would see I was saying that Messi came close to scoring many times, does a goal decide if you had a good or bad game? if he scored instead of the keeper saving, would that mean he suddenly became the greatest? MalcolmW Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 I didn't want to say in the Tom Finney thread but that generation of England players was poor, we talk about greats, they were just great men. Puskas and Di Stephano were a class above. Well Palermo did offer him £120 per week (when he was on £12/10/-pw), plus a seaside villa, plus a Ferrari, plus tickets home whenever he wanted. But he didn't turn them down (as that twerp Fowler, and others, said) - he asked his chairman who said no way, Jose Tom, we will not release your registration and are not prepared to sell. After Finney retired in 1961 he played in several testimonial games, and was always a star, usually the best on the field. So in August 1963 George Eastham, snr, asked if he would play for Distillery in the preliminary round of the European Cup against Benfica. Tom said he could spare 2 days for the home leg, but not 5 for the away. The result of the home leg was a 3-3 draw, with Finney involved in all the Irish club's goals, and a 5-0 stuffing in Lisbon without him. And if he hadn't been injured during the 1958 World Cup England would have at least reached the last 8, alongside Wales and Northern Ireland, and Brazil, who had never won the WC, even though they had hosted it, may have been defeated. Carlos Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Palermo, fucking hell, that's that settled then, an Italian yoyo team were in for him. Meanwhile Barcelona and Real Madrid were fighting over Di Stephano. Quote
Sweep Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Meanwhile Barcelona and Real Madrid were fighting over Di Stephano. His record at Real Madrid is incredible, 307 goals in 396 games. In the ten years he was there he only managed to win 8 league titles and 5 consecutive Champions Leagues (scoring in all 5 finals, including a hattrick in his last one) The whole Real Madrid/Barcelona debacle makes quite interesting reading as well. SnoopJohnnyJohn Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 does a goal decide if you had a good or bad game? I'm actually with you on this point. I've made this argument several times regarding close 1-0 defeats that we've had and the suicide squad screaming for Dougie's head following the result. Quote
