Town Centre Latest

Just had a meeting on Churchgate. Sad to see the Bolton News offices empty. And in a week or two the Travel Counsellors building opposite will be empty. Another 200+ people spending approx £20 per week on parking and lunches in the town... plus whatever other services they spend their hard-earned on - all being lost. Very sad state of affairs.

When will it get better? Should these empty offices be turned into apartments?

Hunter's is the thinking man's bakery. And only a 2 minute walk to Bolton's best chippy by a country mile, Bennett's Lane.

That’s my brother’s go-to place. He raves about it

Those of us who live away have to make do with Carr's freezer packs... they deliver to the door even in Lincolnshire. I've educated my pals at work, especially when it comes to Whist Pies!

is it EXPENSIVE?

Ye Olde trumps the lot of them

I'm due my run to stock up for christmas

dawsons decent to, wigan twats

Bennets is cheap and decent started going in 85 when at sixth form. Whitesides on halliwell road better for fish though but dearer. Best pie shop got to be Armstrongs on Morris Green Lane. Been going since 76. Fraser’s pork pies are something else. Had a Dawsons pasty tother day in Westhoughton. Not bad.

Yeah - the prices are ridiculous. I might be slightly exaggerating - I'll take a picture of the prices next time I'm in. I think it's about £3 for fish.

Round here it's about £12 for fish and chips, the fish are £9 I think

I preferred a little place a bit closer, that was run by an old couple. Did a nice little burger too.

A chippy dinner or tea these days would be an expensive luxury.

When i first Started working in 1980 most chippys were circa 44p for fish n chips, pudding & chips, pie & chips etc, can't remember exactly what an apprentice wage was as it used to go up as you got a bit older but by 1985 a tradesmen's basic was circa £100 a week.

Now I'm not doing the maths but somebody far cleverer than me might, if we say fish & chips is on average £9-£10 what would that make a mans wage using the above ratio's?????

And i bet nobody earns that amount!!!!!

Actually, if you work it the other way round it means on roughly the same ratio fish & chips should be costing around £3.60.

£100 would buy 227 chippy teas at 44p with 12p to spare.

227 chippy teas at £9.50 = £2156.50 ie the average weekly wage on here, so it's about right.
