Alf Hartigan Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 Bennets is cheap and decent started going in 85 when at sixth form. Whitesides on halliwell road better for fish though but dearer. Best pie shop got to be Armstrongs on Morris Green Lane. Been going since 76. Fraser’s pork pies are something else. Had a Dawsons pasty tother day in Westhoughton. Not bad. Quote

I might be slightly exaggerating - I'll take a picture of the prices next time I'm in. I think it's about £3 for fish. Quote

Whitestar Posted December 3, 2024 Posted December 3, 2024 A chippy dinner or tea these days would be an expensive luxury. When i first Started working in 1980 most chippys were circa 44p for fish n chips, pudding & chips, pie & chips etc, can't remember exactly what an apprentice wage was as it used to go up as you got a bit older but by 1985 a tradesmen's basic was circa £100 a week. Now I'm not doing the maths but somebody far cleverer than me might, if we say fish & chips is on average £9-£10 what would that make a mans wage using the above ratio's????? And i bet nobody earns that amount!!!!! Quote
Whitestar Posted December 3, 2024 Posted December 3, 2024 Actually, if you work it the other way round it means on roughly the same ratio fish & chips should be costing around £3.60. Quote
