Can see both sides to this.

I can understand why folk would think this current govn has an agenda to privatise in the long run.

Jeremy Hunt co-authored book calling for NHS to be replaced with private insurance | The Independent | The Independent

Though I think the pandemic demonstrated just how important a national healthcare system is to the public.

There's a faction of MPs in favour of privatisation but it's not and never will be a majority

The same holds true for the electorate at large

Hope you’re right

The more it crumbles the more vulnerable it becomes.

Being an unhealthy nation of ultra processed food eaters doesn’t help.

Spent a long time to not get very far then.

As someone who works in the service I believe its more cock up than conspiracy from the Govt.

You could argue the 2012/13 Lansley reforms were a step in that direction but they have been quietly undone.

I'd agree and not just re general practice either.

I'm firmly of the belief that it's more cock up than conspiracy and I'm no defender of this government.

I'm happy to entertain nuance, do the government mind if a few more folk can't wait for their knee replacements and decide to fork out? Definitely not.

But I don't believe the current mess is down to a desire for back door privatisation- more a result of the ageing population and poor growth post financial crisis.

It hasn't been sold in any increments.

It is simply utilising private suppliers in addition to its own staff in areas where there may be backlogs, or in areas of specialism.

This is perfectly rational, and is the same as local government using contractors in addition to its own staff where a sudden increase in work occurs, or the occasional requirement for a specialism.

You still got NHS dentists up there then or kids running around in NHS specs?

GPs are a mess but as entry level anyone treated successfully is cheaper than anywhere else in the chain , so would be a great starting point. As Zico alludes if we serious about this it is not papering over cracks it is whole sale rebuild so the plan has to be radical and long term involving AI.

Integration of systems across the NHS rather than multiple records is another obvious but massively complicated reform.

Do we have the appetite vision and funds to deliver this ? Won't be a one Parliament thing but at the moment it is just a slow death.

Baroness Mone will set up “NHS Medpro”, a company with no experience but which would be happy to take a contract for £5billion to sort it.

That must be a day. They have about 20 barristers having a go, each with a big entourage added to that IT, Facilities, Stenographers and Security etc.

I'm in an nhs dentist.

I do think that more nhs dentistry should be available though.

Bolton hospital has a well respected eye department.

Looking at 18+ months waiting list for an NHS dentist even then the only one I found is a BUPA practice. The wife and son are legacy NHS patients at their dentist which has now gone fully private save for existing patients.

As for NHS glasses having an extra spacky right eye gives me a bumper voucher towards my specs.

To achieve what? Humiliation of Boris (too pachydermatous anyway)?

It does seem another waste of money to eventually announce what we all already know; that this useless set of corrupt cunts running the country fucked up big style.

This.

It might help if the focus was less about bitching and point scoring, and more about ascertaining what went well and what didn't, why, and how things could be improved.

Even if all that was to be achieved, would any government commit to the level of spending to train people to a higher level than normally required, just in case, together with stockpiling equipment, medicines, and disposables etc?

Time will tell.
