I can move my flights for no charge to next year so am tempted to bite the bullet do it now and then see what @Traf can sort for me for some winter sun instead this year. Choices limited though I’m guessing although we can both self isolate on return for 14 days not a problem so that helps a lot

I hope things change for the better so you can come in December but it is nigh on impossible to predict what will happen here.

Sister who works for Jet2 in Majorca just had notice that they are sacking the whole year off. All flights and holidays cancelled to the Balearics.

 

 

Also, 10pm curfews and the army being drafted in to enforce them.

We’re in France but heading home on Monday as talk of closing the boarders again, cases are definitely on the increase here.

fucking hell it's never ending this thing, I know a few on here are adamant that there will definitely not be a second wave......but it seems our Government, and others around the world, aren't as convinced. The economy is going to be absolutely fucked come the end of this year, if it isn't already.

We've just started seeing some of our customers make staff redundant as they return from furlough. One of our customers, up North, has just announced that about 25 people out of the 50 that they furloughed in April will be made redundant. The "process" officially starts for the when they all return to work next week. 

There are very, very shit times ahead

Rishi launched a retraining effort yesterday- got to happen as this disease has surely changed our way of life.

Looking at Rolls Royce for example, some going in Barnoldswick as demand for flights diminishes.

I do wonder if some of their expertise will get refocused on engineering in green technologies. Turbine blades etc.

Large cash pots being given to local government for cycle lanes, presumably helping towards getting folk fitter and carbon emissions down.

An opportunity for those willing to he flexible.

A lot will depend on if people can afford to be flexible

One of my best customers, has been furloughed since April, he's just been told he's going to be made redundant (we're seeing this a lot in the last couple of weeks) - he knew it was coming, as I guess would anybody who has been on furlough for so long. In the time he's been out of the business, they've streamlined and also started to outsource some of what they used to do. As a company, they'll be leaner and more profitable, and also reduce their headcount, so pretty good for the business.

Anyway, as he knew it was coming, he's been looking at some of these re-training initiatives and schemes in his local area (sort of around Ipswich) - as somebody who is about 35 years old, he's I'd say the perfect age for retraining, the problem he has (and he acknowledges it's his problem, and nobody elses) is that he's looking from going from a normalish wage of £50K per year down to a trainee wage of £20K/£25K per year for a couple of years  -  that's a huge drop for anybody.

Sadly, the industry we work in, whilst it's always a huge growth area, and will continue to be, at present it holding it's breath and not really recruiting, until we know what's going on with Brexit, especially as all the EU funding for R&D will stop, and the UK Government still hasn't said yet if they will or won't continue to the same sort of levels (although that's for a different thread 🙂)

So then......does he re-train on a very, very low wage, or try and keep looking for a wage similar, or at least closer to what he was on before. He's still got a mortgage to pay, and I don't know his exact circumstances, but I'd say he'll struggle to survive on £25K per year, once he's burned through any redundancy he'll be getting

Of course, that's the same problem/issue that thousands of people are going to have in the coming months

I still go with the mantra of “it’s easier to get a job when you’ve already got one”

I took a massive wage drop a few years ago after a small redundancy payout. Just meant losing the luxuries. Holidays were few and far between and my ST had to go. Managed to get this job after two years. If I hadnt taken that job I wouldn’t be where I am now
