I got stuck in a current once, nothing like that one in that link, but enough to cause panic and have me frantically trying to swim against it and be pulled the opposite direction 

When I finally got back to shore I was worn out, fell asleep for a while and got burnt and then sun stroke

Aye happened to me and 2 mates in Mexico.

Under current came out of nowhere and dragged us out that far we could barely see the beach. Kept pulling us under and dragging us out.

Was fucking frightening. Took everything I had to swim against it.

When i was kid on holiday in Majorca about 5 members of a German famiy got killed by a riptide. One got dragged out and others went out trying to save them and ended up drowning too. Very grim.
