Site Supporter Spider Posted February 12, 2020 Site Supporter Share Posted February 12, 2020 Despite my Scottish heritage, I prefer bourbon. Don’t mind a single malt, like, but I’ve developed a real taste for the American stuff. Question for the class - what’s the difference between straight bourbon and rye? Is it worth me spending £30 for rye?
Traf
Bourbon has to be at least 51% corn grain, Rye is at leat 51% rye.

No expert on American whiskey ( or any really) but do drink Irish and certain Scotch it’s only worth paying it if you are going to enjoy it. not sure if you know this site, but you can buy samples, build a sample set and test out first , could get a few samples of different ones to see if you prefer rye https://www.masterofmalt.com/samples/whisky-samples/american-whiskey/
Members Rudy
IMO Bourbon is sweeter and smoother, rye is a bit harsher on the tastebuds. However I prefer a Rye whiskey with a mixer but bourbon straight Makers mark and Bulleitt Rye are my favourites

Bourbon is more caramel-like, whilst Rye has hints of spiciness

Site Supporter Cheese Posted February 12, 2020 Site Supporter Share Posted February 12, 2020 Can't touch the stuff. Snuck a bottle of Bells (I know) into my bedroom one Christmas when I was about 14, and drank the lot whilst playing Sonic the Hedgehog. I was ill for about a week afterwards, and it put me off Whiskey for life.

Site Supporter MickyD Posted February 12, 2020 Site Supporter Share Posted February 12, 2020 Irish whiskey is a much smoother drink than any Scotch Single Malt Whiskys. Bushmills is one of the better ones.
