It's a sickness

Been lucky enough to collect a group of suppliers and customers who have private boxes/'premium' club membership at the local stadium in Perth and have attended a number of sporting events with free piss and food etc. Some football (real football), some concert, some Aussie Rules.

Can't abide the Fremantle Dockers - AFL's version of St. Pauli. Don't mind going to West Coast Eagles matches though and have had some very good sessions there.

They like to play this just as Chelsea love to play Harry J and The Allstars classic:

The sickness part is that I replace "What if I say I will never surrender" with 'What if I say I'm a Lever Ender". Despite protests from fellow attendees I just can't shake it and do it every time and louder and louder as the day progresses and more cider is consumed.

Seeking professional help.

Been watching a bit of Aussie rules the last year or so. Don’t mind it now.

Sydney’s GWS Giants were the surprise package last year getting to the final (soundly beaten by Richmond). It’s similar to NFL in that all players come through a draft system and in theory it’s a levelish playing field.

Still trying to get a full grip of the nuances of the game but it’s enjoyable.

Melbourne has 10 of the 18 league teams so it’s a bit niche even in Australia.

As previously mentioned - Monteith's Crushed Apple. As jayjay will attest, nectar of the gods.

It's nationwide mate but you are correct. It used to be the VFL and just played in Victoria but they have successfully exported it around the country. RL still king in Queensland and NSW but AFL has made inroads with the Brisbane Lions, Sydney Swans and the GWS mob.

As you say the draft system and salary cap means the glory gets spread around. Some of the old traditional clubs in Melbourne have the best fan bases though. Entertaining going to Collingwood. Feral crowd - I sort of have a soft spot for them because every fucker hates them. Richmond support good too. They have had a superb team for the last two seasons. Might stretch it to three in a row before age and the draft catches up with them.

Living over this side though, always like the Eagles to do well. The red rag Dorkers can fuck off.

Use to be a whole lot better when unrestrained violence was allowed. Took my lad to his first game when he was 8. Eagles v Richmond. The ball hadn't even been bounced and around half of each team were belting fuck out of each other with the bloke they were matched up with. All been sanitised now. Where have we heard that before?

Aye

I listen to the Christian O'Connell podcast every day. He's based in Melbourne these days but I think his breakfast show has gone nationwide now (worth a listen Bolty, funny lad and it's a good breakfast show - look up Gold 104.3fm)

Seems like the Pies are the Liverpool of the league, everyone thinks their fans are horrid cunts by and large.

Have watched some videos of the best scraps - they didn't half used to get stuck into each other. (Youtube takes you fairly quickly to the state of origin fights as well, some proper dust ups there too)

Shame it's gone so sanitised, Aussies are good for a scrap.

Why do they specify 'crushed apple' cider? As opposed to that 'sliced orange' stuff..?

Sort of related but I've noticed 'extra special' custard in the shops with the blurb 'Made from Madagascan Vanilla' - sounds great, apart from about 95% of all vanilla comes from Madagascar. Unnecessary poncification in both cases.

Im sure youri knows this, but the alcohol content in vanilla essence is top drawer

Dearer than knockoff Lidl 'listerine' though and both full of nasties...I'll stick to Brasso.

do you still drink it, using a piece of bread as a filter?

I'd love to see them do it again, there's a huge amount of bad feeling from the GAA to the aussie rules lot.

It’s been played regular, albeit intermittently since late 60s with different compromises of the sets of rules ( Aussie rules takes some of its rules from the original form of Gaelic football, obviously from convict days) but now fairly standardised “ international rules”

think they played first half with a round ball and second half with a rugby ball in one series.

think the next one is due November this year with one in 22 planned also.

Historcally lots of thuggery , particular from Australia and a series in the 90s I think nearly lead to it being abandoned completely such was the level of violence.

im a huge GAA fan, member also, but not a fan of this to be honest, but the Gaelic football isn’t the best of GAA  in my opinion anyway, hurling is and the “ internationals”  of comprised rules between hurling and shinty are much better viewing

Sounds a bit shit I know but I'm talking about adopting a team. I have to, I'm in Melbourne. You're right about Collingwood, a lot of hatred there. I can see Victoria Park, their traditional home from my balcony. The Nicky Winmar racism doesn't paint a great picture either.

Anyway, described Bolton as a football club to an Aussie and he said North Melbourne should be my team. Arguably greatest ever player, Wayne Carey played for them. Also good at domestic violence, adultery and drug abuse according to Wikipedia. Your typical Aussie male then.

Which suburb are you living in?

I gather Melbourne is a rather splendid place to hang your hat?

For no reason at all, I’m drawn to St Kilda simply because they never seem to win so much as a brass knocker.

I don't know if Melbourne any good, haven't seen that much of it, lockdowns and all that. Certainly good for sport which I was looking forward to. Two football teams for a start, Melbourne City and Victory. I live in Abbotsford.

Go with Victory. City are, well, Citeh.

St kilda is a beautiful place as well.

I got into watching Aussie rules a while back
my team of choice is collingwood. Why I’ve no idea but I recall there name when I tried to get into a few years ago but couldn’t but this time it’s stuck. Great game to watch

Don't follow it closely but always watch the highlights at work to pass a dinnertime on and it's strangely compelling, if I ever go and visit the family down under then going to a game would be summat I'd definitely try to do.

Because of where they live I've a leaning towards the Fremantle Dockers, seemed less glory hunting than the Eagles.
