A View From The Other Side

I realise some of you may have zero interest in this which is fair enough but from time to time I like to have a snoop on OppositionWays out of curiosity. Thought it was worth compiling some together which I'll do in this thread whenever I get chance.

Seems like Lincoln have some pretty level headed fans but then one or two absolutely bitter fuckers.

Pick of the bunch includes:

THE BITTER

Quote

How about 10 points deducted for every £million of debt a club has?
Wonder just how low these perennial cheats would drop?

Quote
Bolton stayed in Lincoln last night. Not leaving much to chance.

No that was so they could rack up extra debt.

Quote

Surely we can't lose to these cheats?
Why are they not on multiple minus points?

Quote

I'd rather be us than them. How long do they have to pay their debt?

Quote

The simple truth is, as much as the away fans won't want to admit it, we lost to one of those vile clubs tonight. One of those that has spent beyond their means, and clearly continues to do so.

THE PRAISE

Quote

Good game. Shit result.
By the standards of last season Bolton should be pushing for promotion. But then that was last season.

Quote

Beaten by the better team. Good to see a big away following.

Quote

FT. Good game. Credit to Bolton - they did enough to control the game throughout, although we had some bright moments, especially in the first half. They also scored at exactly the right time and managed the game out.

Quote

Bolton also look like a really good side who should be in the top half of the table.

Quote

I have backed Bolton to win the league as I think they are a decent team. They looked like a very settled team that are used to winning.

I live in Hitchin which a lot of away fans stop off at for pre match pints when playing at Stevenage as its shit for pubs there

One Saturday Wigan are away at Stevenage and not realising this, went for a pint in town in a BWFC training top. Upon getting close to a pub saw a Wigan flag and loads of fans and decided it was best I give it a miss

That's the most Wigan fans ive seen outside of Wigan on a match day apart from when they play us

I used to live in Hitchin. Belting little place and I would move back there in a heartbeat. Still follow Hitchin Town FC results. Stevenage is a right shithole though. In fact there are elements of Stevenage that would have made the pie-men feel right at home.

It made me think of a poor man’s Radcliffe (Stevenage)

Got no loyalties to the place but every bloody year I have to come to the defence of Stevenage 😂 some cracking pubs and restaurants on the High St

The rest is like a social experiment but most new towns (and a few owd uns) are like that

Old Town is great for pubs and restaurants

There's a great Greek place in the town centre but it closes around 6pm

And the bar at the ground is great as we know!

Outer areas are just normal but all tgey build now are flats as its London commuter belt

Its not that bad

Well I must admit to being years out of date with the place but I will stick with Hitchin in that neck of the woods. If it is the ale you want, never go to Letchworth a bit further north. I think there are only two pubs in the entire town.

I was there the other day and saw a wetherspoons but no other pub in the centre

Plenty eating places but no actual pub

I think there is one other boozer, but again I am out of date.

They are all nice people in north Herts. Busted up my northern pre-conceptions about southerners!

Anyway, have a pint down Sun Street for me and I can recommend that Quotidian Bakery too.

I work in Horwich. In a previous job in Horwich I bumped in to more Wigan fans than I would have liked. In my new job, and in my department, it's 25% Bolton. 25% Wigan. 25% Arsenal. And 25% don't like football, he denies he's gay.

I moved to Horwich in March.

There is a Wigan fan in my street, he's a nice fella tbf.

He told my partner that he has been hiding from me.

This makes me feel content.

When I see him, I make that Robert DeNiro gesture from Meet the Parents pointing to my eyes.

I lived near Hichen - hated it - miles from anywhere, Stevenage is a dump, glad to to moved out of that part of the world.

I live and work in Wigan most latics fans are knobheads only know 1 who is ok.

Told your partner when your at work under the sheets maybe; that’s why you worry him with the DeNiro gesture 😄

In the past 20 years, I've been on a night out there 3 times (wedding, birthday and anniversary), all 3 times been threatened by their lot, 3 times me and my mates made sure it ended badly for them...scum the lot of them

Most are utter bellends.  I know a few lads from Aspull who are sound but their hatred of us is  borderline obsession . It is fucking weird.

There doesn't seem to be as many around these days most likely due to them drifting slowly back to their natural level of overall wankness.

We need to beat em again this season just to make their pathetic lives a little worse.

Been there recently with work.

Garden City Brewery, quite nice, tucked down a side street. Other than that, pretty much nothing. It's a very strange place.

Tell a lie

Opposite the Wetherspoons there is a place that sells cans of ale for extortionate prices which doubles as an offy and a bar

I want to like it being the Planning geek I am and all the history but now it's trying to be two different places and is a pain to drive round

Spent 20 years living there, thankfully managed to move away 10 years ago.originally moved to be nearer the mrs family. Coincided with there rise and our demise during that time I guess. They really are a strange bunch.

Bright start for them. Plenty of pace and Cozier-Duberry looks dangerous.

Quote

Totally unnecessary shove from Wootton throwing their keeper into the hoardings from so close.

We’d be fuming about that if someone did it to Addai or Ben.

Quote

Very lucky not to get a card.  Good job there isn't any VAR.

Quote

Danger again down our right as their left back skips past Mothersille and is driving at the defence. I shout no foul as MM gets back on the shoulder but maybe he should as the Bolton player just keeps going and going as we stick to our men covering. Half way line to the box. Tackle finally in and goes over. Looks a dive and ref days no but they still recover to cross.

Bolton unlucky not be in front.

And another chance as McAtee said in. Offside and puts it past the post 1v1 for good measure.

Big warning signs though. Do we try a back 3? Bolton definitely better side.

Quote

Bolton playing some lovely stuff at times tbf. That switch and touch was excellent. They look ready to hit the ground running this season.

Quote

Rode our luck at times. Would probably say Bolton deserve to be ahead at the break due to early chances but they've gone off the boil these last 15 mins

Quote

Hahahahah, stunning. Distant second best for my money, but you love to see it.

Quote

Weird half. Very weird. Defensively we look all over the place. We need to go to a three at the back. They’re having a field day running at us.

Quote

How the f*ck are we in the lead here 😆

Quote
Hahahahah, stunning. Distant second best for my money, but you love to see it.

I don't agree with distant second best at all. Very end to end, if anything we'd created more.

Quote

Bolton been the better team but we’ve grown into it. Crying out to move to a back 5 with Olowu as the full backs are exposed defensively.

Quote

Not a great half.

We were well behind first 25, then a bit of a nothing 15 mins but we finished well. Not sure we deserved the goal but will obvs take it.

Quote

Standard first game back first half, Bolton look much better. Great goal which will do him the world of good.

Their number 19 is very very good.

Quote

Bolton should have had a pen, btw. When it was whipped across and their lad slid in, O’Keeffe hauled him back.

Just seen it again on Sky.

Quote

I’ve been thinking we’re lucky to not be behind here, only to snatch that at the end of the half 😂

Quote

Mad that they haven't scored. We've been very poor defensively, maybe less so this half but they've had less of the ball. Whenever they get at is, particularly down the right, it all looks a bit shambolic.

Quote

Can't see this ending 1-0...

Quote

SMASH and GRAB!

Quote

This lot will never beat us will they. 100 shots on target, hit the post, hit the bar. 2-0 down. Manager looking utterly baffled. Lovely stuff.

Quote

Bolton, given what they've spent, are an absolute bunch of bottling rats.

Quote

First half felt like we were lucky not to be behind. Second half we could have won by more or drawn. A really open game which I’m not sure Challinor will be happy about.

Quote

They must hate us. Getting to the point where there's only 3 things guaranteed in life, Death, taxes, & a County win against Bolton 🤣 very happy with that, we weren't spectacular, rode our luck at times, but can't complain with a 2-0 win against a fancied side. We'll get stronger & have better performances than too.

Quote

Great result, largely down to Bolton being terrible in front of goal, 2 shots on target each.

Quote

Strange affair as always seems to be the case with these Sunday early kick offs.

Bolton played some nice stuff for 30 minutes but we weathered it pretty well and was nice to nick the goal on half time.

Second half we just completely nullified them and bullied them at times. Didn’t really give them a proper sniff before a nicely taken goal by Woots at the end. Didn’t really feel like we’d ever concede to be honest.

Quote

Great place to be when your first game of the season is a 2-0 win against Bolton and we didn’t really have to get out of second gear.

Quote

Could you not see the RE second half...? Hit the woodwork again. Some big saves by Addai and some spilled in the box but thankfully dropped for us or lashed at with no composure.

They weren't as dominant second half but they'll be disappointed not to score that half too.

Quote

great start and always love a rendition of "bolton get battered" hope it was picked up on the tv

Quote

Very open game, and difference was that our shots were on target, and theirs were not. Could have easily been 2-0 the other way, and maybe it would have been, apart from the fates declaring that we always beat Bolton.

Quote

That looked every bit the match up between a seasoned, confident team and one that has loads of ability but even more to prove.

Bolton probably deserved something out of the game on the balance of chances created but for County to grind that out the way they did, while clearly not at their best and still working things out, says a lot about our resilience and adaptability. That Bolton squad is loaded with talent and they had the luxury of bringing four players off the bench that they've spent sizeable, six-figure fees on. Meanwhile, we're missing five who would likely have got in the matchday squad today.

Quote

Bolton looked impressive first half, the wingers were a handful and they should really have scored at least once. We struggled in an unfamiliar formation, but when you've only got two fit centre backs needs must. We were very fortunate to go in ahead at the break. Second half was much better, but again Bolton probably deserved a goal. One of those days where we could still be playing now and they wouldn't have scored. Plenty of promising signs, particularly if we can get a few defenders back and switch to wingbacks.

Quote

I thought Bolton were a handful and based on that small sample should be up there. On another day we could have been beaten easily. And we are the team to beat.

We might be a bit up and down at the start of this season but that is a tremendous 3 points and we probably only need another 89 and we are up!

Quote

Bolton were really good in the first half I thought; Xavier Simons is some player, as is Cozier-Duberry off the right. Them taking Burstow off hugely played into our hands as it allowed us to jump across and double up their wingers a bit more. They'll do well this year if they manage to play like this more often than not.

Quote

Simons was the best player on the pitch in the first half. We gave him far too much space while they pushed two up on Norwood to choke our supply. Our press seemed a bit disorganised and passive compared to theirs.

We also didn't seem to know what to do with McAtee. He was dropping really deep at times and our centre halves seemed unsure whether to follow or stay home. Thankfully, he did absolutely nothing of note.

Quote

Seen McAtee cop a lot of flak from some Bolton fans. Works hard but I've not seen the same spark from him at Bolton as I did at Grimsby/Barnsley.

Quote

Thought we were very lucky first half today if bolton had a goalscorer we should've been 3 down at half time

Quote

Am I alone in thinking the atmosphere felt flat today?

I'm not sure if it was the daft early kick off time, people not having time to have a pint or the miserable feeling of getting soaked early on but it just felt like it was lacking compared to recent games with them.

Quote

Always beating Bolton sure makes up for always losing to Mansfield

Quote

Have to say I’m surprised with the amount of praise for Bolton.

A pretty half an hour or so for them in the first half (number 19 looked unbelievable for that period), but apart from that they looked the same as they did under Evatt. Their recruitment has a lot to answer for considering some of the fees spent.

They’re powderpuff, will beat the easier teams and fold against tougher opposition. They never really looked to me like they were busting a gut to score.

They may obviously improve as the season goes on but on today’s showing they looked like a team that would do well to scrape a final play off place rather than push any higher.

Can’t argue with any of that.

MATCH THREAD

Back 4?

Uh oh.

Quote

If it is a 4 we are toast.

Quote

I miss the Championship where you knew some of the oppo players....

Quote

I haven't heard of any of their players. Does that mean they're crap?

Quote

If it is a 4 , it might be better to get hammered rather than just a narrowish loss .

Quote

I know quite a few of their players just by having a passing interest in league 1. Unfortunately the truth is, they’ve even got a few players on their bench that would walk into our first team, which tbh says a lot about the position we’re in.

Starting with Gale so very attacking.

Quote

A clean sheet would be a miracle, also quite funny if it happened

Quote

When you consider Erhahon one of the top rated L1 midfielders over the last 2 seasons is on the bench it says it all .

Quote

I feel for Cleverley tbh in positions like this.

Quote

Not to get too carried away with the idea this is some david and goliath type situation. Checking both squads out on transfrermarkt theres not a huge difference. Bolton have a bigger squad right now to pick from is all. They weren't very sharp going forward last week, or towards the end of last season. So this isn't the uneven match some might be expecting. It'll be a tough match and tempers flaring I imagine. Sticking with 1-2 Greens.

Quote

Quick trip to the cleaners is scheduled, I fear

That's where Bolton are taking us, with their speedy forwards. Made to measure for them, unfortunately ....

KICK OFF

Quote

Playing well tbh

Quote

Good start. Keeping the ball well

Quote

Sounds good but the rules of football dictate you must score when on top.

Quote

Too easy. shame as up until that goal we made Bolton look very very average.

Quote

A shame as we have started brightly. Mumba squandered such a good chance only minutes ago. Fine margins, even in League One.

Quote

Yup, 3 nil to them I reckon.

Quote

How on earth was the goal Hammond’s fault?

It was the whoever the goalscorer climbed above. You can’t allow the goal scorer to get the better of you like that.

Quote

Steven Schumacher collecting his annual 6 points a season against Argyle. Ryan Lowe gotta be licking his lips for October 4th.

I will never blame Cleverley for this, this squad is absolutely rancid.

Quote

Surprised by Bolton. They go long a lot. They were better two years ago.

Quote

It's frustrating as we're only a few players off being a decent team. We're not being completely outclassed.
We need another striker and a couple of new central defenders.

Quote

They should be 3 up

Quote

I’d say it’s two closely matched teams and styles.

The glaring difference is defence.

Quote

I'm not impressed with the ref so far.

Quote

Bolton are head and shoulders above us. We carry no threat whatsoever, and look incredibly frail at the back.

Quote

If we can get at their defence a bit more I can see us having some joy. They also don’t look amazing at the back, especially their right back vs Mumba.

HT

Quote

I'm not too disappointed with this despite the score. I think we've more than been a match for Bolton and for 20-25 minutes we made them look very very average. We had to manage 5-10 of pressure from them but I've not been overly worried by anything they've done. We are 2-3 players short but once we have that we'll be good I think.

It was Galloway caught under the ball (not Ibrahim) and the keeper got a very flimsy hand to it. Very possible neither of them start when everyone is fit.

Galloway - my bad.

It was a well executed corner to be fair to Bolton. Really difficult to defend that 1 v 1 with so much space.

Quote

We’re looking a lot better away to Bolton than we were at home against Barnsley.

I’ll take that.

It definitely feels we can get something out of this despite being a goal down.

Quote

In open play we look good but their keeper has not been tested once first half.
Bali has their full back on toast, Pepple and Watts look sharp but we have still created next to nothing.

Quote

What the hell are Carrs Pasties?

Quote

We've actually beaten their press impressively a few times today.

Quote

We arent even safe in League 1 with this lot

Quote

That is the easiest goal they will score all season. fudging atrocious defending.

Quote

I don't quite know how they are 2 up but we haven't done enough in the final third.

Quote

We look like a relegation team. We are not a threat going forward in the slightest; this is very, very worrying.

Quote

We lack the pace and quality of Bolton. Not really causing a threat to any team.

Quote

Has their keeper made a single save?

Quote

This isn’t fun to watch.

Quote

Cozier-Duberry showing why loans are beneficial.

Quote

Relegation beckons…..

Quote

I’m still not going to overreact or kick off or anything, but I am starting to worry a little bit, Barnsley and Bolton will be the sort of teams we should be competing with for the play offs, to be beaten soundly by both should ring alarm bells for Fox and the Argyle hierarchy.

Quote

We really need to stop this aimless tippy tappy at the back with no hint of incisive forward balls

Quote

Bolton diving all game even when winning. Embarrassing.

Quote

We have made 10 signings . Bolton 10 , Barnsley 6 . The differences, both clubs have managers in place for 6 months - Bolton have signed stronger .

However , we can’t keep using that as an excuse .

Quote

Huge positives to take from the game:
Only 2 goals conceded (There were 3 last week)
We had 3 corners

Quote

Very poor. Zero shots on target says it all and the fact neither keeper made a save all game shows how entertaining it was!

Quote

We are in such deep poo. I can't make myself write anything else.

Quote

The difference I saw was that Bolton have a quality young premier league keeper on loan who covered their high backline.Coziers duberry on loan from Brighton will probably be one of the best players in league and they had a commanding centre back. If we get back Hazard then add some attacking flair and a real solid CB we will not be far off.

MATCH ROUND UP THREAD

Quote

Barnsley and Bolton won't get easier games this season.

We haven't got a clue how to create and we haven't got a clue how to defend. Another day and that ends 4 or 5 to Bolton.

Quote

Cleverley's record in 2025 is not good reading.
Played 26, won 5, drawn 5, lost 16.

Quote

Just watched the highlights. How on Earth did Palsson manage to get so far away from the Bolton goalscorer for their second goal. At one point he was running back almost alongside the attacker, he turns to look over his shoulder to check that player's position, the camera cuts to the player crossing the ball and then back to the centre where the attacker is completely unmarked, ahead of Palsson and Palsson is standing, helplessly in the centre of the six yard line. How could he get into such a poor position in the split second that the camera moved away from him? Shocking defending.

BRIEF SYNOPSIS THREAD

Quote

Despite going a goal down in the first half it was an even contest - we were in the game - however we were poor in the second half and were second best all over the pitch.

Quote

It's been 55 days since our previous number 9 left us and still we wait for one.

Quote

Amaechi really disappointed me, didn't look up for it today

Quote

Was a promising and even first 20 minutes until we coughed up a simple goal and never looked like getting back into it.

The next 70 mins were abject and toothless attempts to attack whilst always looking fragile at the back. We never got close to stopping Cozier-Duberry who was a relentless menace all game.

Quote

I thought that the first 20 mins Bolton couldn't get near us.

We were aggressive in the press and moved the ball around quickly with precision.

Watts, Mumba and Boateng for me made things tick. But oh how quick the wheels fell off after the goal.

Quote

Was at the match today. A very poor game where Bolton took the two chances they were handed and both sides were toothless otherwise.

Quote

For what it's worth, I don't think we are a million miles away from being ok. The issue is, what we lack is hard to find and everyone wants them, in the sense of a dominant centre back who can organise and an effective No.9.
We have no spine and simply we also nees numbers, options, even from the bench. Assuming their are absolutely no wingers available for loan anywhere?? As Bolton found one.

Quote

The first 15-20 minutes Bolton didn’t press us, we had space at the back and transitioned quickly from defence into attack (not much midfield involved, though, only flanks), and if anything we were pressing them in their own half.

But just before the goal they literally and metaphorically stepped up and we didn’t look the same. I certainly felt that this was a case of Bolton adjusting their game, whereupon we suffered from our old frailties at the back and a non-existent middle. Barnsley by contrast played a more open game and we weren’t as stifled.

Quote

What was eye opening for me was Bolton had the likes of John McAtee and Ethan Erhahon to call on from the bench while we brought on Roberts and Finn. Just an embarrassingly huge gulf in the quality of squad depth compared to ours, and it highlighted what a huge failure this transfer window has been so far.

Quote

As others have said we started pretty well. But not long before Bolton scored their first, they made a rare attack. The linesman at our end, who was atrocious throughout, gave a corner when the ball clearly came off a Bolton player. It was the corner that LAH flapped at and missed. But Argyle never cleared their lines properly and from the next corner Bolton scored. I accept that overall Argyle were very poor but these decisions dont help. In the second half the same official seemed to see a couple of offsides against Watts that were clearly based on his position after receiving the ball, rather than when it was played. Not an excuse, but at times we were playing 12.

Quote

we are not as fit as our opponents.

Quote

20000 miles travelled since start of 23/24 season - for 5 victories. Let that sink in......

Quote

I wish I didn’t care so much

Good review, ta.

In the build up there were a few "does anyone know any of the Bolton team ?" remarks with "I don't know Div.1 type additions.

They were in the Championship 2 seasons ! How odd.

Good to see Xavier Amaechi still being shit.

Thanks as ever for compiling. Not gonna lie skimmed through the Stockport bit, only interested in reading when we’ve won 😆
