Wanderlust Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 The overwhelming feeling on the Pompey forums is that they are going to pot and after last night's loss are turning on the owners. Some fans are turning on the players saying that their decline wasn't the fault of the Cowleys, but the players themselves. A few though, reckon they've still got some gas in the tank and point to a second half performance in which they had loads of possession and were very competitive in midfield winning most second balls and forcing us to hoof it away - which is fair comment. With a couple of changes to come for Saturday's game they may well offer more of a threat and it can't be forgotten that in the early part of the season they rocketed up the table so they're hoping to regain that sort of form sooner rather than later. Either way we can't afford to be cocky or complacent. So what do we need to do? First there's the defensive question. Santos defended well apart from when he was rinsed by the winger towards the end but he did make a fair few headed clearances and some of his long range passing was quality. My problem with Santos is that he slows the game down to the point that his distribution is ponderous and predictable and we lost the advantage of quick transition that we've seen with the Toal/Aimson/Johnston back three - which allows us to get forward before the opposition have had time to park two rows of defenders in front of us. I'd revert to Aimson for Saturday. Williams did OK - as did Beck who nearly scored - but I'd start Williams and Bradley as WBs - we can always change them if required, but I think they offer more threat early doors when we need that all-important first goal. Midifield has to be stronger than the starting mids last night. This is the area where Pompey will be looking to dominate so we need to be far more competitive. Up front? Dion and JDB to start again but would love to see Dan on at some stage. Sadly, I've lost all confidence in Baka. My prediction is 2 nil barring a disaster. Quote
radcliffe white Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 It’s simple barring any knocks it’s the same team that started Plymouth 2-0 Quote

There is a question re Santos but other that team picks itself IMO. Which is the team that started v Plymouth. We beat them with no midfield really yesterday. People talk about progress and the idea that we would be considering starting games without Williams,Dapo and Santos 12 months ago would have seemed crazy, but in current form none make our must effective 11. Site Supporter Biggish Dave Posted January 11, 2023 Site Supporter Posted January 11, 2023 Has to be the same team that started against Plymouth. Maybe it's just the way I saw it last night but I thought the back 3 player further apart from each other than when Aimson is in the middle of them. I like what i've seen of Williams so far, a few more games under his belt and he'll do a cracking job for us. Any sort of win please. I expect a good few changes in both starting line ups and hopefully the bell ringer will be on a mode of transport which breaks down. Quote

Leyther_Matt Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 Get at them early. Same team as Plymouth. 2-0 win. Quote
green genie Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 Don’t you need to bring in the Southampton / Cheltenham lad? Thinking about it how more fired up could he be than debut against his parent clubs rivals Quote
captainmed Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 We’ve finally stopped conceding the first goal and are keeping fairly consistent clean sheets now which is encouraging. The issue is that we score so few goals that a clean sheet is becoming essential if we’re going to win. We must start converting these draws into wins. 2-1. Quote

Rizlar Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 My worry Santos will return and I never thought that would happen but we look better with Johnstone Aimson and Toal. Quote
radcliffe white Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 If santos returns then whoever drops may as well move on, them 3 at the back have been excellent and also offer something in an attacking sense Quote

Wasn't hard core, worked in Chichester at the time. I think we won 1-0 with Nolan scoring and on the train back all the Portsmouth fans were moaning about what a cunt Diouf was. Quote
Big E Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 we need a big win. Santos on the bench for me. i felt he was poor last night and ruined the flow. he looks good recovering but a lot of his mistakes are the reason he is recovering. i just wouldnt break up a decent group who have played well and deserve to be starting Quote
Site Supporter Cheese Posted January 11, 2023 Site Supporter Posted January 11, 2023 Portsmouth have just had their goalkeeper recalled by West Brom... Quote
Moderators Casino Posted January 11, 2023 Moderators Posted January 11, 2023 santos wasnt poor last night, he won just about every high ball in our box, but he did have a couple of moments late on - im putting that down to tiredness dont kid yourselves the others dont make mistakes, its just so much more obvious when its him however, hes not quite ready and aimson has earned a start, so long as we can play the same midfield as last saturday - they can all take the ball, mj isnt bad on the ball but they are better other than that unchanged though from the bits ive seen, both left backs are better against tired legs Quote

marple whites Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 Don’t be changing that defence from the past few league games. Same team that started against Plymouth. Quote
Jol_BWFC Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 When Santos is 100%, he should start ahead of Aimson. He didn’t look 100% yesterday, so I’d rather see him back on the bench for the weekend. Quote
