I'm thinking this way about Victor, a full pre season hopefully finding his place and his role. There's got to be a player in there for us somewhere

Hes played a good number of games at our level and above so some of the 'hes never a footballer' stuff is clearly ott

But you look who is saying it and move on

What would be a worry is this season is the first hes really clicked on the goals front and even then a hat trick v FGR and a few penalties bumped that up

I think hes judged as being dapos swap which is probably not fair....also, was it really 500k, which is a lot of money for us

Anyway, hopefully by october, hes proved he is a footballer

I suppose

In all the speculation about incomers, and we obvs need some, im equally interested to see if we hold on to our assets

Johnston, morley, santos may attract interest

No doubt john will be let go on a free

Bit soon for toal

Exactly how I see it in terms of saleable assets.

Santos - top dollar but keep at all costs. Almost impossible to replace

Morley - unlikely to attract a big fee, yet. Think it works for both parties for him to stay.

Johnston - probably wouldn’t attract as high a bid as Santos but there’s definitely something in the fact that he’s young, English, good with ball at feet and has a good pedigree. However, if we had to sell one then I’d be cashing in because I think he gets targeted / found out on too many occasions against the bully boys in this league and we could replace him far more easily than Santos.

Dempsey - arguably better / more important to us than Morley but I’d imagine his value is quite a bit less. Doubt we’d get a championship bid so it works for both us and him for him to stay.

Toal - likely to be worth a lot more in the future. Too early for us to maximise profit and for him in terms of progression.

John will go for nowt.

Amazing isn’t it. Before Xmas everyone was saying they couldn’t see what he brought. Just shows what a bit of a run and confidence brings

Must admit, having read Kachunga’s goodbye and the “thanks for your services” replies on Twatter my first thoughts were the lynchmobs calling him fit to burn, bone idle cunt, etc., following the Dion Charles sending off. At that time he was very much a bit-part squad player. Then, once given a longer run in the team it was realised he wasn’t as bad as first feared.

I don't think its realistic to expect a 31 year old to accept a 1 year deal especially in a league where he's one of the better players.  From day one in August he's probably already wondering if he'll get another contract 9 months later.

I'd give him 2 years personally because I think he's been unlucky with mainly freak injuries, but I don't have to justify it financially so respect whatever the club decides.

But if we offer one year there's no way he'll be signing it until he's explored all other avenues (IMO).

It’s a fair point - but whether it’s us or someone else, I’ll be surprised with his history if someone will stump up the gamble for 2 years.

He clearly likes it here, he’s been happy, built up a good relationship up with fans and management, he’s got himself performing in a way that didn’t happen at Millwall. That might stand for a lot, if discussions go along the line of “If you get a good run, we see you being the main man up front, you are pivotal to the way want to play/evolve, you are still young enough to play at this level and above for a few seasons, doing it with a club/fans that love and appreciate you and have supported you. If, as we believe you can, you a consistently contributing to our push for promotion, by December we’ll negotiate an extension to your contract.”

That may be incentive enough to get him signed on, initially on a short-term deal.

As for Thomason, I’ve no idea why he’s popping up on this thread. He’s not on the retain/release list! Evatt has made it pretty clear with his contract extension, playing him in the run-in and speaking about his positive character, that he’s part of our future.

If we are throwing in players on contracts, the let’s throw DJ in, first decent bid, get rid.

I keep hearing about Lee being injury prone but without checking he seems to be have been available for about 90% of games?  I'd say he's one of the less injured players in our squad this season, someone will probably have stats on how many times players have been in the squad but he must be in the top half?

Sadly he does suffer hip problems which was the main reason Wendies didn’t keep him and so it’s been a big bonus that he’s played so many games for us but time catches up with everyone and given it seems to have been a similar hip problem that’s kept him out of recent games it’s probably best to let him leave sadly.

Haha! Good point! Forgot about that.

To be fair his stats are pretty poor for a striker when you look at his career.

Must admit that could be a reasonable compromise, hadn't thought of that.  Basically we guarantee you a year, and by January we'll let you know if its going to be extended - if not we'll tell you and you can find another club immediately or end of season.  Hopefully that would be more attractive to him than 2 years at Fleetwood or Stockport!

excluding loans and obvious releases

GKs: currently 0

Need: 2 new keepers

Comments: just needs sorting, doesn’t need to be Trafford level but can’t have another Dixon or Crellin.

CBs: currently 4 - Jones, Santos, Toal, Johnston

Need: 0 unless upgrade MJ

5 players for 3 spots if we renew MJ - which I probably would as the defence is probably the department that needs the least work/overhaul.

CM: currently 3 - Dempsey, Morley, Thomason

Need: A new CM that can compliment Morley’s passing range and Dempseys tenacity. If we had a true goal scoring midfielder that would be perfect.

Comments: 5 players for 3 spots if we renew Sheehan and Lee. 6 if we renew MJ and count him.

Personally would like to see a refresh here. Need more goals from midfield and a different dynamic. Maybe keep one of Sheehan or Lee and sign another while loaning out Thomason for development in League 2 or lower league 1.

Wingbacks/Wingers: currently 4 (probably 2 though) - Iredale, Randell, John, Sadlier.

Needs a real think this. Evatt said post match Barnsley we haven’t scored enough goals this season. Our wingbacks are expected to be very attacking players for us. Fossey, Bradley, John, Sadlier, Randell. None of them are defensive wingbacks.

Is part of our lack of goals problem playing a back-5 system, even an attacking version?

How we play this really depends on who is available to bring in.

If we can get better quality wingers on loan/permanent deals than wingbacks then I’d love to see us move back to a 4-3-3.

However seems more likely we will stick with the back 5. Since if Sadlier and John will leave, that means only Randell and Iredale are left.

in which case need two new RWBs and that seems an easier recruitment task than signing wingers for both sides.

Strikers: currently 3 - Charles, Victor, Jerome

Need: 1 golden boy to partner Charles.

Comments: 4 players for 2 spots if we sign Bodvarsson but again, depends if there is an upgrade we can get.

My problem is if we sign Bodvarsson that means we really don’t have space for any more strikers and considering we’ve struggled to score enough goals this season, I do wonder if it would be best to try and find an upgrade to really match Charles. I love Bodvarsson but the risk of him being injured again is too high for me.

Victor was a bit of a blue chip purchase for us and I really really hope he comes good next season but he needs to sort out that first touch and general ball control. I supported him all the way since Jan never gave him any grief but now the seasons over it’s clear he’s got a lot of improvement to do.

Dempsey has shown it can be done so hopefully Vic can follow in those footsteps.

He didn't score a single league goal this season. And it's not the first time he's not scored a league goal in a full season. He scored some important goals in the Papa John's but bottom line is we can't be paying him 4k a week or whatever he's on.

Not really relevant. Sheehan, Dempsey, Morley have all had spells out of the team, and scored, unfortunately Katcha hasnt.  Our manager doesnt think hes good enough either. Good luck to him, nice chap, but nowhere near good enough for a team with Championship ambitions.

Oh aye, suggesting he's not a footballer (what does that even mean seen as that's clearly his job) is daft, the point is whether he's a footballer for us or not.

As it stands jury is obviously out and questions are there as to why we signed him other than shit we need a forward ASAP, who can we get. If we can harness whatever his strengths are, or he can fit into what Evatt wants he could be a real asset. Big summer for him and us.

I've got a feeling we'll be getting the ball to the front men quicker next season so he will hopefully come good. We'll still try to play football but with players who are more adept to getting crosses in earlier and a more dynamic midfield.

No idea why I think this, it could be total bull

It's as valid a theory as any other proposed, mate.

I wouldn't mind seeing us go 4-3-3 with Jones and Iredale as full backs on occasions where we try something different.
