We're not just planning for the next 12 months but potentially for a future in the Championship and we can't afford to be carrying players who won't cut it at that level. Nothing against MJ, Sheehan and JDB. They've done good jobs for us. But I think we need to upgrade and progress. It looks like MJ would have been staying regardless given the trigger in his contract. I'm glad there was no sentiment with Kachunga. On overall evidence he had to go. I worry that with Jerome, Charles, Adeboyejo and JDB means a full compliment of strikers when it's so clear we need to be better in that area. On the basis of this (provided new deals are signed by Sheehan and JDB) we need: two new keepers, one right back, one central defender (so that Gethin can genuinely be flexible as the second RB and to replace Aimson/Mbete), two new midfielders. I hope we can create the room for a further striker. Do somewhat agree but the only players contracted past the end of next season are: Santos, Charles, Iredale, Morley, Toal, Thomason, Randell and Victor. So plenty of spaces to fill and upgrade to be ready for the Championship if we do go up next season. Quote

There's a reason why Evatt gave him a decent length contract. It may well be an important season for him- but only in so much as he missed so much of this. Lee gone, and MJ another year. Morley and Sheehan aren't dynamic type footballers, so some more 'engine' will be useful. Especially if Evatt takes a slightly more pragmatic approach to getting us up. Quote
captainmed Posted May 23, 2023 Posted May 23, 2023 I would have had a massive cull and let all of those out of contract go. We need better than Bod & Sheehan. Quote
tomski Posted May 23, 2023 Posted May 23, 2023 Wish the lads going well or majority anyway. Means we need a lot in. Big changes afoot. Quote

I'd expect a squad of 23 for next season. So 6 additions needed. But Sadlier/John probably will probably leave, so make that 8. 2 goalkeepers. 2 RWBs 1 LWB 1 CM 1 FWD Still leaves one spot to fill, maybe leave that until January to see where we stand with injuries. Randall can always play RWB, but I reckon we'll go with Iredale at LWB again unless we find a really good one or John gets his act together Quote

I don’t think we need to worry about JDB getting us close to full compliment of forwards. We’ve just got rid of Kachunga, N’Lundulu and Shoretire, so I’d like to think we’re due at least 2 others. tomski Posted May 23, 2023 Posted May 23, 2023 I’d like Nlundulu back if out of contract at Soton Quote

Leyther_Matt Posted May 23, 2023 Posted May 23, 2023 Been a pleasure to watch Lee turn out for us but we can’t rely on him to play half the games these days, never mind 90 minutes twice a week, so the best call really. Though you could throw MJ in a similar bracket, albeit he’d only be back up anyway. Chuffed Kachunga got to turn it round by playing such a big part in the PJT win but again the right call to shift him on. Quote

I think a no brainer is to sign Stockton on a free, 1 in 2.5 playing for a poor Morecambe team in this league last 2 years, and on a free, do the business this season and move him on if we get promoted. He isn't comfortable defending on the left, scary to think of him on the right! We'll have the Bradley replacement, Jones and Toal as back ups so hopefully that will be enough at least till January. Im a big fan of him, I think he's honestly our best striker, I do like Charles and he scored 20 goals, but he's missed so many chances as well and is tentative to shoot. JDB is our only player along with Dempsey who isn't afraid of having a shot, he presses well, offers physicality, and he's also quite clincial with his chances, his finishing is the best I think we've got. But, we definitely need another striker. As we all know, injuries happen. If JDB gets another longer term injury at 30 years old now I would consider alternatives going forward. But as of next season currently, he has to start along with Dion. Edited May 23, 2023 by Lostock Whites Quote

Lostock Whites Posted May 23, 2023 Posted May 23, 2023 (edited) Gonna be interesting to see if Evatt alters the formation next season. 5 at the back seems to get exposed a lot in this league now, his role model pep doesn't play with wing backs they double down the wing with wingers and inverted full backs. Now I know I'm comparing us to City here, but my point is the best possession side in the world doesn't play with wing backs, in fact barely any of the top teams do. Evatts never going to change his style and I don't want him to, but if we want to move up a level and progress, a change in the shape might be needed Edited May 23, 2023 by Lostock Whites Quote
