Could not believe only 5. Aye. He will get a telling for this. I was expecting 11 or 12 with all the subs and the shenanigans with the 2 red cards. Fook knows how he got 5

A slightly risky strategy, but I'm sure they've done the maths, and it's working. Obviously opponents will see it and look to take advantage. its been happening at least 2 years good luck trying to do him for pace its not only that hes our ball player that makes him invaluable
August 16, 20233 yr That was my beef with the ref, his continued inability to recognise and deal with blatant, often dangerous fouls while instead showing his assessors he'd read all the new rules thoroughly. Couple of mins before Charles sending off he'd been dragged down off the ball, everyone saw it except the ref. If a couple of the wild lunges from Rooney, Vela etc had connected the victim would have been snapped in half. I've no issue with any of the new rules, by and large brought in with good intent, but refs have to be able to do the basics as well

Allows Evatt to push the whole team on a touch and press. Cornerstone of our approach. A strength can be a weakness, but it's up to opponents to come up with something to stifle us.
August 16, 20233 yr Not just his pace and strength he won nigh every cross that came in from Fleetwood. Sooner September 1st comes the better.

I think Santos has really stepped up this season, he was very good last season but at times against real big centre forwards he was not as effective. The lad last night looked useful but as game went on Santos got better. Also did not react to numerous sly little digs that ref and linesman seemed to ignore.

Fook knows how he got 5 Shows what a nonsense the rule is. It'll make a huge difference across the season if added on time is just an arbitrary number between 5-13 minutes. The semi-final today was the same, six minutes added when earlier in the tournament the same game would've had 9-12.

He was decent for us, strong and capable of long passing and some mazy dribbles. Although my main memory is the game changing sending off at Accy (understatement). Played a few championship games for PNE after returning there, very good signing for Fleetwood although looking at them last night he’s not the only one, offensively at least.

It's only 3 games in and we'll have some tougher matches but both JDC and Baxter have proved themselves more than capable so far. Add to that we have much better squad depth, January signings playing at a much better level and Iredale stepping back in from injury effortlessly to replace Johnston, we are looking much stronger than last season. Bradley yes of course but I don’t get the worry about replacing Trafford. We’ve got a keeper from the championship and until last night he didn’t need to join in, same as Trafford didn’t have to join in sometimes. Trafford’s a top keeper for this level, but it’s hard to recall a string of games that we won because he was outstanding. Santos, Bradley, Dempsey, Charles and others had more influence on results.
August 16, 20233 yr We also look better balanced in the wing back positions, last season we over relied on Bradley, and now we’ve threats from both sides. Edited August 16, 20233 yr by Mounts Kipper

It’s a good point. With threats all over, an opposition manager is stuck between a rock and a hard place. If they try and double up on both our wing backs and pack the centre of midfield (to protect against the quality of Dempsey, Morley, Sheehan etc) then they sacrifice attacking options. Then you’re left with team who sit back and defend and shithouse for 90 mins. It worked last season but this year (early days) our crosses, quick movement and set pieces seem to be a step up from last term. The other option is to try and attack/play football. As Fleetwood saw last night, it then leaves you exposed to long diagonals, slick interplay and centre mids who can shoot, thread passes and shift the ball wide. We move the ball so quickly that we find the gaps before the other side even have realised they’re there.

August 17, 20233 yr I like Baxter , think he is gonna be a good'un and i know he hasnt many games under his belt , but his playing out from the back isnt brilliant ala Trafford and his positioning for Fleetwoods goal was absolute dog shit. Hindsight is a useless tool to kick yourself up the arse with but I did think that at HT we should have subbed Charles and boy george as I had a bad feeling about the ref . We are assuming Dion gobbed off but we dont know. what if he didnt and the sending off was just the ref being a petulant twat ? As for the IE red , didnt Brown question their off-side goal after seeing it back ? think I read that somewhere. All that said and done , great performance and about time we had an ulimate enemy ref after Knight & Riley.

And Iredale being more comfortable pushing up - it means Williams gets the support that the RWB does with Jones and I think is a big contributor with Williams looking like a different player too. I’m not sure that Iredale is as strong defensively as Johnston was (which makes sense considering Johnston was first and foremost a CB and Iredale a full back) but considering we have Santos next to him which adds protection, I really think Iredale suits the system better.

Me too. Iredale seems more suited to the way we’re playing with Vic and DC up front. We’ll have a better idea when we’re forced to change front two if he can adapt. Or if IE feels we need a change the lot.

I actually thought Iredale and Jones have done a lot less going forward so far. Not in a negative way, more that we’re shifting the ball a lot quicker and certainly getting the ball in to the box quicker. Santos’ passing numbers must have plummeted compared to last season which, again, is definitely not a negative.

I don't think this can be underestimated. As good as Bradley was, it also hamstrung us a little because he was our 'go to' and we relied on him too much. Teams knew this and could set up accordingly. Having such good results when he didn't play also shows this. JDC has been superb so far and there's no bigger compliment to him than to say we're not actually missing Bradley so far.

August 17, 20233 yr Only just seen the video of Scott Brown's post match interview and as always he was brutally honest about Fleetwood's performance - whilst being respectful to us. What surprised me was that right at the end the Radio Lancashire interviewer asked him about transfers and without skipping a beat Brown said he was going after a CB, CM and a striker - basically a new spine for the team. No idea if Fleetwood have much in the way of budget for that but he has connections - maybe Fleetwood will become a different prospect as the season progresses. Slightly concerning as I think he's already done a great job with the resources he already has and despite the result, Fleetwood showed more against is than Cheltenham and Lincoln put together.

It can't have been nice in their changing room.
