Why can't they just make seasons longer?

Or reduce league sizes?

Too many knock on effects at that level with the play offs and the time it takes to organise the leagues for the following season with the geographical boundaries etc

Atherton Colls have had similar problems over the years, it is part and parcel of non league as their pitches cannot cope with the amount of rain we get in the winter months

There are  also matches off for international call ups for so called 'smaller' countries.

Once upon a time football was only played in month's containing an R (so September to April).

Reducing leagues sizes is clearly an option, but clubs at all levels do want gate receipts.

Second of all, not a chance the pro leagues aren’t ever calling it in April. Isn’t the FA Cup in June these days?!

Quick check, 19th Aug 78; in 80s the earliest was 15th Aug 87 but most were 25th at least, latest a ridiculous 29th August (81).

No wonder I was so keen to attend Lancashire Cup games early to mid Aug, desperate for the season to start and to see the new signings.

1977-78 started Aug 20th

1978-79 started Aug 19th

That's impressive to be fair. I can't even remember when we played our last home game, and that was a 5 niller.

I was at a work get together and got talking with a Bolton fan and an Everton fan, we were still on a bit of a downer post-Derby but telling the EFC fan how well we played in our previous game, a 5-0 win, that we'd both attended.  Neither of us could remember who the hell it was against.  Proper racking our brains for a couple of minutes and coming up with a couple of wrong suggestions before I remembered Oxford (age is my excuse, other lad in his 30s had none).
