I'd agree to an extent whilst recognising he's not going to be a Metete type for strength.  Kieran Lee got the same assessments, a bit underestimated defensively just because of his physique and creative style.

I thought he was outstanding defensively, just by reading the game and making great interceptions, nicking the ball, then passing it simply, not giving cheap fouls or possession away.

Good point.

A good midfielder can be good defensively without having to be lunging into tackles every two minutes.  The best midfielders (and defenders) read the game well enough not to have to dive into tackles.

On many occasions last season Sheehan was our last defender.

Kieran Lee wasn't the greatest in terms of tracking back/ big tackles.

He worked all over the pitch, and hassled opponents particularly in an advanced position, winning the ball back high up.

He had tremendous movement.

I see sheehan perhaps having an almost artistic passing range that can be a joy to watch.

Playing so deep though, he doesn't seem to have to freedom to go wherever he can hurt a team.

Whether that's instruction or he's just not quite the player Lee was, I don't know. Probably both.

I  respect your opinion too but I guess it all depends on what Evatt thinks in any given situation ultimately. And I’ve long since given up second guessing him.

That’s my justification to the missus for still playing 8 a side twice a week. I’m slow as fuck against the young uns these days but I like to kid myself that my reading of the game keeps me competitive 😊

Ill die on the hill that we bought Sheehan to replace Kieran Lee as our attacking midfielder with the passing ability to unlock defences . His injury meant we got an extra season out of Lee (which was a blessing in disguise) . by the time he came back we didnt have a recognised DMF so he slotted in to do a job , but IMO we lost more than we gained. Bit like converting Ricky to left back. Hopefully now Sheehan get to play further forward. with GT &/or Matete to be the the cover for the back 3 .

Have a mate thats a Wednesday fan and every time we meet up we have a 15 minute fawning session over John sheridan and Kieran Lee.

Not exactly but I do know they were simply called The Wednesday for many years, including years when they were in the Football League and FA Cup finals. They only added Sheffield to their name, quite a while into their existence.

If Bannan had made more of an impact here you'd have needed more than 15 minutes!  3 of Wednesday's most influential midfielders played for us. 

On Lee, there's obvious similarities in style with short neat passing and low centre of gravity, who don't lose possession easily (rarely aiming for the 35 yard glory pass).  But Lee far more of a goal threat, ghosting into the box with great timing many times, not always converting (infamously missing about 4 sitters at Newport I think) but some of his finishing was sublime, eg Ipswich, and despite the odd nice goal I don't see that composure/instinct in Sheehan, more suited to a deeper role IMO.

Interesting thread regarding some of your experiences in Wales and Welsh speakers.

I don't speak Welsh myself despite having lived in Wrexham all my life (awaits pelters for this 😀), but I can say I haven't experienced much if any of what some of you have. Lived in Wrexham for over 40 years. Spent years out in pubs in my younger days. Not denying it didn't happen to some of course as I have witnessed this in Caernarfon however there was absolutely zero malice meant, they were literally just talking to each other and were welcoming and happy to speak with us.

There are hardly any Welsh speakers in Wrexham. I'd challenge anyone to find people speaking in Welsh anywhere in Wrexham, pubs, shops on the street etc etc. The only local place to Wrexham that still has Welsh speakers in any real numbers is Rhos and even there its the older generation mainly. Rhos though is the next village to Johnstown. It is possible that what's been discussed happened in a Johnstown pub - curiosity wise, which pub was it and what year was it? Johnstown used to be a rum old place with many many characters but the vast majority were good folk. 

However again, welsh speakers in this area are in very very small pockets. It would've been a piss take without doubt and there would be absolutely no reason to try and offend anyone with it. But to suggest that the majority locals in Wrexham would suddenly switch to Welsh if their English detectors go off simply isn't possible because hardly anyone could even if they wanted to.

Anyway - the game on Sunday. First of all I don't expect us to get anything from the game. Despite getting promoted last season our away performances last season weren't great and we often made very hard work of it. Our home form was different gravy mind. 

Wish Mullin was fit and could play, and that's one of the reasons I think we'll lose. Just think you'll be too strong and like others have said there's a high possibility of us conceding a few goals. 

Never been to Bolton for football or otherwise so really looking forward to this one. Its hard for me to believe that a few years ago we were going to hell holes like Boreham Wood and Solihull.

I get the Disney/Ryan and Rob hate too. Because you haven't experienced it so the lack of understanding is understandable. 

I can only speak of what I know and the promises they've made; and they have delivered on them all (stadium redevelopment is in the works) and a whole lot more. If you surveyed every fan in the country of what they would want from the owners of their club these two would almost certainly be at the top of or very close to the top of meeting all of that criteria.

don't get the bitterness towards wrexham tbh, much rather have them type of owners than some of the nutters like basani and the andersons and the oil lot

Their football grounds definitely do not! No disrespect intended to them but when I started following Wrexham we were playing the likes of Hull, Fulham, Sheff Wed, Preston, Cardiff, Swansea, even Man City when they sunk down the leagues.. Then we had a series of horrendous owners and found ourselves in non league for 15 years. 

Great to be able to finally go back to proper clubs with big stadiums and huge support.

Majority of  Wrexham fans have little expectation of this season other than the hope that we can hold our own and maybe sneak a play off spot. We're under no illusions whatsoever how tough that will be though.

I'd be happy with a mid table finish. But I don't know how good the league is so its difficult to say right now. We have a good few players with League One experience and a few unknowns. Mullin has been playing with an injury for two seasons which is now sorted so the version of him when he comes back should be more than good enough to get us a few goals.

Just delighted to be back amongst some really big clubs in a properly competitive league. 15 years in Non League wasn't fun.

I do to an extent as its mainly the circus and media hype that surrounds us now that gets up peoples noses.

That's why Parky is god in Wrexham now, because despite all that stuff going on he's still managed to get promoted twice. It could've just as easily gone wrong on the pitch and he would've had the perfect excuse. The media circus, the documentary, etc etc. Money to spend is not everything and doesn't guarantee anything in football, as we all know.

Plus we're now seen as a threat by other clubs fans as we can compete financially.

We have never ever as a club had any money to spend before these owners. Never. We had to rely on getting great managers like Denis Smith and Brian Flynn who could work miracles on a tight budget.

Contrary to popular belief I don't believe they've actually had to spend their own money since we got back into the league, such is the money generated from sponsorship and pre season tours, merchandise sales, sell outs every week etc the club must be generating all if not most of the money we're spending. Whether that's sustainable long term when we inevitably have a crap season is up for debate.

Shaping up to be the most competitive League 1 ever, certainly during our latest spell here.

I was worried a few weeks back, but a spate of recent signings has me gunning for a Top 2 finish. Despite throwing money around like a Virgin in Vegas I'm gonna suggest Birmingham are bad value to win the league at 2/1.....they'll get some surprises.

He's made most of his money on investments as well apparently.
