If Sheehan plays on Sunday then they will target him. It may be a case of bypassing him and going more direct to the front three with GT backing up

Judging by the two games thus far we have gone more direct. Sheehan coming short has been found out and maybe now it is time to push him forward to compete with Mcatee for that number 10 spot. Throw Matete alongside George and make us solid in the centre.

Charles and Collins pick themselves up front so for me it would be one spot open between Mcatee/Vic/Sheehan

I would give it Sheehan Sunday as we need someone to open them up

It's amazing, how last season's Player of the Season is suddenly a liability.

Having seen the goals Wrexham have conceded in these first 2 games, I will be amazed if we don't score 3 on Sunday.

Wouldn’t say a liability but for all his abilities if we are no longer playing the short ball and letting him dictate things then he might be better further forward.

He's not really a scrapper that breaks up play. He'd be ace more advanced for me.

Taking your best footballer out of his preferred position to sit him in one of the 10 roles cos he’s been “found out” 🤣

Sheehan is the fulcrum of everything we do. If the opposition see this and press accordingly, you work the ball elsewhere to find the space that has been freed by them committing to pressing him. It’s in game management.

Sheehan isn’t a 10 and certainly wouldn’t be as impactful in there than Collins / McAtee. There’s been a reason we’ve slightly changed formation and to put Sheehan in there isn’t it.

Matete might well force his way in to the side over the coming weeks but it won’t be at the expense of Sheehan. Yeh there might be times where he is in there alongside Thomasson to close shop etc but to regularly start games with both of them who are similar in type of their play won’t happen.

To his credit Vic has looked decent in pre season and last night. He’s probably rightly pissed off he didn’t start on Saturday. But playing him and Charles with Collins / McAtee behind defaults back to exactly the same formation we had last season. Again no doubt there will be instances where that happens but Evatt for the time being looks fixed on 2 10s behind 1 striker. So it’s Charles or Vic to start off with.

we’ve cried out for a plan B for a few years now. He finds one and people start going on about reverting to his previous plan A. Boggling

My take is that Dapo was comfortably our best player, yet he was out of favour as we adapted our shape which made us much better and he became surplus to requirements.

It's extremely early but there is a very small sign that Sheehan could follow a similar way if we're committing to this new shape.

Thommo and Matete makes much more sense than Thommo & Sheehan

Nobody has said he’s liability or he shouldn’t start unless I’ve missed something? just usual overreaction

what people have said me included is who he partners in midfield is the questionable bit

Sheehan plus one makes us even more susceptible for me. Makes it easier for opponents to press him.

If you want him doing what he does best, then give him more protection, strength and physicality with others.

If we're being a bit more direct, then he's not receiving it as much and not going to get the opportunity to "run the game".

Fwiw, I can see a horses for courses approach, depending upon the way the opposition play.

Sometimes like last season, sometimes more direct and physical.

@Tonge moor green jacket You seem to be saying that Sheehan can only play one role in midfield? Apologies, if not.

I’m with others that, at the moment, he remains our number 1 midfielder, and it’s Sheehan + 1. Last night, confirmed to me that both Thomason and Matete are ahead of Morley, and it’s a question of who partners Sheehan on Sunday.

As the season progresses, this may change.

I reckon he can play further forward.

He has done it before, but Evatt settled on his deeper role last season in particular.

If teams press us, so that he can't get it and be as influential as we'd like then why not try him more advanced?

If however we're looking at three strikers, and only 2 in midfield, then I'm doubtful as to his effectiveness. Unless the wingbacks tuck in more, which they don't seem to do, as Evatt likes them wide.

Let’s see, there’s been at least a few (not you) who’ve suggested Sheehan doesn’t start in our favoured 11.

I agree with you, it’s who is alongside him that’s the debatable part.

McAtee isn't playing in the 10 though. We no longer play with one.

One thing that has become clear is Morley is way down the pecking order.

As the team and individuals have grown and got better he’s very much stayed where he was 12-18 months back. I like him, he’s got good aspects to his game but hasn’t yet kicked on to the standards needed to make a case for a regular spot

BWFC 3

Wrecsam 2....

Evatt the cunt out.....

I find it laughable that we're already suggesting Sheehan doesn't play and that if he does play, he moves to another position.

We seem to be moving the ball quicker so far this season than last and this should help Sheehan play more on the half-turn than having to face Santos for indeterminate lengths of time waiting for the hospital pass.

If the centre halves and other midfielders do their jobs properly, Sheehan can do his.

He's so average to me and always has been. Just scored a couple of screamers 2 years ago.

I just don't know what he offers. Even technical stuff aside, his mentality doesn't look right, extremely lightweight, doesn't run, doesn't get stuck in.

He seems a good lad, but the less players we have like Morley the better, to me he represents the softness of our side, as does Randall Williams.

That Schon is half their size yet he's double the aggression, we need to harness that more in my opinion to get out of this difficult difficult league.

I think people are worried about him being in a midfield 2 against midfield 3s where he'll be outnumbered. And Matete-Tomo is a more physical duo to withstand that.

Reasonable worry to have - I have the same concern. We'll see how it pans out on Sunday

Our selection difficulty apart from switching to more long ball football, is that we now have 4 top notch forwards ( for div 1 )........if we start with 3 of them, we've only 2 men in midfield & Sheehan will miss out, going forward he'd be bypassed by the long ball & defensively he's too lightweight to be in a 2 man midfield, we'd be overrun.

Whatever, when they're all fit, they can't all play but i fear that our increased use of the long ball will mean that class players like Sheehan & Collins will be the ones to miss out.

Should be Sheehan plus Matete, or Sheehan plus Thommo, or all 3 in big games away from home.

I’d be going with the former, especially at home where I think we’d pass teams off the park, but I reckon I’d be in the minority.

I am not bothered about booing just hope one of our grows some and stands up to tosser

Laugh away but it makes no sense to automatically start a player whose only asset comes into play  when  we’re dominating possession and not facing a serious threat through the middle - there will be games and phases when we’ll need more this season. Great in L2 and against strugglers who offer little threat but against top sides we can’t afford to tie up other players to cover for his lack of defensive quality - they’ll have their own jobs to do.

Team is still in transition so we’ll have to wait and see which way Evatt goes on this and it might be on a game by game basis now he has so many options

Sheehan is more than capable covering defensively he'll often drop in if one of the CBs goes forward. With 3 centre backs we shouldn't need anyone deeper than Sheehan.

Sheehan and GT/Matete are more than adequate as the centre midfielders. If the opposition set out to kick JS then we can go wide or over the top (what we should've done at Wembley)

Absolutely entitled to your opinion but I can’t believe how much you’re doing Sheehan a disservice here.

I imagine you’ll be saying that GT has far better defensive qualities, probably because he’s a bit bigger and gets loads of yellow cards. Watch them closely and you’ll see that Sheehan has far better positioning and ability to spot the danger / cover, he’s also more agile and quicker to get across to danger. I’m not saying he’s the perfect defensive mid, obviously he is lightweight and I’d prefer Yaya Toure, but in my opinion it’s quite a lazy assessment of Sheehan to just use his physical presence to assess his defensive capabilities.

All 3 away, and one striker fewer.

Unless it's a genuinely weaker team.
