athywhite1958 Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 RIP to Sven Goran Eriksson, good manager, good bloke, liked his shagging Quote
Lt. Aldo Raine Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 He batted well above his average An inspiration And seemingly a good, well-liked man to boot RIP Quote
FrancisFogarty Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 Apart from an impresive shagging rcord he was just what England needed. A change from the like for like suits we'd had before. Quote
Alf Hartigan Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 (edited) I liked him, but let’s be honest he was a disaster for England. Although I’d take into account all the players from different clubs not getting on. RIP Sven. Edited August 26, 2024 by Alf Hartigan Spelling Quote

Alf Hartigan Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 (edited) He had better players than Southgate has had. But GS achieved far more. We’ve still won fuck all though. Edited August 26, 2024 by Alf Hartigan Quote

We’ve still won fuck all though. Not sure I agree with that. One thing Southgate has done is manage to erase club loyalties from getting in the way. Sven didn't have the advantage of looking after the u21s first though, and I doubt he'd have been given the time to do that, and bring players through from it before clubs could build a wall around their own. Lt. Aldo Raine Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 For what it's worth, I think Sven would've got us to the final in 2018 Quote
Alf Hartigan Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 I think that generation around 2002 far exceeds what we’ve got now Quote
bolty58 Posted August 26, 2024 Posted August 26, 2024 Hard to forgive that friendly against Australia at Upton Park. Years of grief from that. Seemed a very nice bloke though. RIP. Â Quote

Certainly the first 11 anyway. Sven was hampered by club rivalries. Man Utd and Arsenal clearly fucking hated each other back then and he never really got on top of that. Plus there's Chelsea and the Scousers (Terry and Gerrard axis). You have to conquer the rivalries otherwise you're fucked at international level. Aragones and then Del Bosque did it with Spain and the big two and won 3 tournaments in a row. Quote
SalCity Biggie Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 I had the pleasure of meeting him back in the early 2000s when I worked at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester, he seemed like a really nice bloke. Quote

Kane past his best, but the leading England goalscorer has been a huge asset for example. For me, some of the previous greats were just that for club, but weren't consistent at international level. Be that becasue of club rivalries or not quite as good as they were made out, who knows. Quote
Sweep Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 I think he always came across quite well, but let's not pretend he was a good England manager, he was shit Quote

deeane Koontz Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 Rip Sven Always came across like a decent bloke and super calm. Shame that generation of England players were a gaggle of absolute whoppers Quote

In the grand scheme of things though, you're probably right, as a QF team is pretty much the level that England should be at, I just thought back then, we could/should have won something, as I think the players he had were better than what Southgate has had (of course, he's won fuck all as well) Quote

Plus, I don't think the 'Golden Generation' were as good as what we've had for the last few years. This is with the caveat that I can't stand either Gerrard or Lampard, or Terry or Ferdinand etc. Didn't even watch that match we lost to Germany, just wasn't bothered about that team at all. Quote
