Tonge moor green jacket Posted April 30, 2025 Posted April 30, 2025 Finally took my revenge on some and for the first time, cooked some with my dinner. Anyone else ever eaten them? Blanched, then sautéed. Bit like kale and spinach, in that there wasn't much flavour, indeed a touch less bitter. Bit more substance to them too. Quote
Cheese Posted April 30, 2025 Posted April 30, 2025 (edited) Very good source of iron apparently. Have considered making nettle soup a few times, but can't be arsed because of the dog piss factor. I'm not wading through a field of nettles to find some that 'probably' weren't pissed on by a dog that's survived on a diet of Wotsits and its own shit. Edited April 30, 2025 by Cheese Quote

If you put cat piss on them they cancel each other out Quote
DazBob Posted April 30, 2025 Posted April 30, 2025 Funny this post has arisen. I stung myself for the first time in about 30 years at the weekend. Stuck my hand into some undergrowth to grab a ball and obvs didn't see the neckles. By fuck it hurt. And for ages too. Quote
Tonge moor green jacket Posted April 30, 2025 Author Posted April 30, 2025 Regularly get stung. Over the years I gathered an almost instinctive feeling that the stings could somehow benefit arthritis. Then buggerfucktwat, just the other week I read that there is evidence of precisely this! Anyway, it's piss easy to gather the buggers- plenty in the garden, but easily foraged too. Just pick the tops off the highest ones. Some gloves a recommended, and maybe a suitable twatting stick if you want to wade in a bit, to be sure that no dogs have pissed on them. Very nutritious- the plants gather up lots of minerals, and a reason why they make a good, natural plant food too. Fancy a go at wild garlic and nettle soup next. The former is also out now, and is fantastic. Quote
burnden Posted April 30, 2025 Posted April 30, 2025 One of my mates was on about making nettle beer this afternoon. Quote
gonzo Posted April 30, 2025 Posted April 30, 2025 One of my customers other year was telling he previously had chronic arthritis in his hands. Showed me pics with all bumps and shit on his knuckles. Some Chinese healing lass said sting his hands with nettles regularly and the anti bodies that rush to the stings will clear his problem up. Year on and his hands were fine. Works as table tennis coach. Quote
MancWanderer Posted April 30, 2025 Posted April 30, 2025 Had some nettle soup a while back. Very uninspiring. Not sure I’d bother again. Wild garlic though. That’s another level. I’ll forage that stuff all day Quote
Tonge moor green jacket Posted April 30, 2025 Author Posted April 30, 2025 It doesn't taste of much, so I reckon it's imperative to add other veg/herbs and spices/stock. Utilise it for it's vitamins, minerals and fibre. Quote

Favourite weed for me, love em. Even more nutritious than kale & spinach. Been making nettle campfire bread with the kids at work this week. Always a laugh watching the faces of the cocky ones who are convinced they’re too ‘sigma’ to wear gloves whilst picking. Had a phase of making the soup throughout the spring but not done it in a few years. You can harvest the seeds in September as well, great on porridge. Bolty’s going to be even more convinced I’m a mungbean eating Green Party member after this post… That’s if he makes it past Gonzo’s post unscathed 😄 Quote

No, but I'm thinking I may have accidently consumed some magic mushrooms at some point because when i walked past a farm i saw a rabbit, a pheasant and duck stood in a circle looking like they were having a deep conversation Quote
only1swanny Posted May 4, 2025 Posted May 4, 2025 fell into some yesterday when taking the dog for a walk, all up my leg! Some geese along the canal and they usually don't even move when we walk past, yesterday they shot up hissing with head bobbing etc and the dog reacted (normally doesn't care), kept hold of the lead but lost my balance and landed in nettles with shorts on. Still not the most irritating thing from yesterday! Quote
