He "wasn't ready". At 10 years old? No shit! What where they expecting? Whoever made that call needs hunting down and sacking if they are still stealing a living. People wonder why no one comes through the academy, because we had nuggets working there.

Newcastle let Shearer go at one point! It happens.

According to the stories, Shearer had a trial at Newcastle and put him in the nets. So they didn't let him go.

We've had zero players coming through our youth system. Players like Nicky Hunt and Kevin Nolan came from other clubs after being released. We are wanking off after Joe Riley got into the first team at 20, Phil Jones is 19 and playing for England. The next England captain and at 10 he wasn't ready to get into our youth system. I'd love to know who was and where they are now.

Alan Ball ?

George Eastham ?

Didn't we release them as kids, or is my memory wonky ?

Correct on both counts, Alan Ball was from Farnworth, they said he was too small. A bit of trivia, his grannny used to mop the steps at the coop when it was about were Argos is now, opposite the market hall. He used to frequent Tara's in Mealhouse Lane. Squeeky voiced dwarf. Excellent footballer thou.

Ryan Giggs was turned down by Man City at 13.

And their youth policy has produced some good players

10 years old is a bit young to be saying he's the next Baresi

So the story goes (again), City went to sign Giggs up on his birthday and United had been there at 7am.

Our youth system has produced fuck all. Different story if we'd missed one player whilst producing many others.

If your job is to spot young players and you've brough in a load of kids who haven't made it whilst deciding that someone who played for England at 19 doesn't stand a chance then then you aren't fit for purpose.

We do operate in the most difficult circumstances though, given the clubs in and around us.

People rave about Boro's system but they haven't got a club within miles of em. A mate of mine is a Boro fan and he was saying they face competition from the likes of Leeds - I pointed out we're closer to Leeds than Boro.

No idea about your story.

Giggs was playing for a team coached by a City scout. He recommended Giggs to City well before United.

He joined Deans FC, who were coached by Manchester City scout Dennis Schofield, and was signed to the School of Excellence.

He went on to captain Salford Boys who beat Blackburn in the Granada Schools Cup at Anfield in 1987.

While playing for Deans, however, Giggs was watched regularly by local newsagent and Old Trafford steward Harold Wood, who told Sir Alex Ferguson to snap him up, or he would regret it forever.

True, but then so do Blackburn and their scouting/youth system seems to produce more first team players than ours. It's not like we've never had a good youth system either. In the mid-70's, half the team that had come through our own youth system.

A mate works in the Academy at Boro, he points out half their catchment area is fish.
