smithills_gent Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 I have heard several people use this word recently, looked it up and it isn't in the dictionary Where has it come from? A Tv show, film? Quote
kent_white Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Probably the same place as addicting. As in 'this game is really addicting'. Quote
DazBob Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 In terms of stupid words, it doesn't even come close to "burglarize" Quote
bolty58 Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 The only hope is to revert to the old Grammar School system. I am convincicated of it. Quote
Youri McAnespie Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 (edited) i reckon bolty is right we should give some thought to grammer schools a one size fails all compreehensive system had clearly failed yet the left would never allow a two tier system of education back in and so it goes we'll have the likes of dave and gideon running the show in perpetuity. A few words on Grammar schools by some bloke I've never heard of before... http://www.huffingto..._b_2333269.html Edited June 13, 2013 by Youri McAnespie Quote

Youri McAnespie Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I was looking up a term, similar to 'conversate' and it led me to some of the most unsavoury sites I've ever seen, and I've seen some unsavoury things in my time... Anyone who thinks having a Black President now means it's all ebony and ivory together in perfect harmony (side by side on their piano keyboard...) over in America, well, it's still firmly 1857 in outlook for some. You can't leave it at that half story Dan.... at least tell us what you were looking up so we can discover how unsavoury the site was Quote
Youri McAnespie Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 I really wouldn't want to give publicity or promotion to what I found...It wasn't any depraved sexual sites or owt - I'd bang the links up without a second thought if they were. Quote

kent_white Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 The most irritating and worrying tendency at the moment is the incorrect use of thr second and third person singular when it comes to decribing football teams. It happens all the time in Australia and America and I've noticed it creeping into some Sky News and even (perish the thought) some BBC reports of late. For example.... 'Bolton Wanderers is looking for a new Manager following the sacking of Owen Coyle' It's ARE you utter, utter bastards!!!! 'Bolton Wanderers ARE looking for a new Manager'!!!! It makes my blood boil when I hear this. It's 'trendy' and it's starting to creep in. Mark my words. Be alert to this danger! Quote
Not in Crawley Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 It didn't work before, many bright children being cast aside into secondary moderns, and it won't work again. Bolty, once again, blunders in. My children go to school in Kent. They have the Kent Test, an updated version of the 11 plus. There is nowhere to say that this improves the children it the schooling in the region. It's just too backward snd conservative a county to change. School are good schools down to a decent head and the catchment. Telling children at 11 years old you can go one way or the other is too young and too arbitrary. Quote

"We can't tell Leon and Karl they aren't smart enough to go to Grammar School at 11 years old. It will hurt their feelings" Crap. In your world, the bright ones get held back to be thrown in with the melange of moderately brights and dead thicks instead of being given the opportunity to progress and shine. I suppose this must be true of the ice cream selling sector is it? I will say however that you are right in some respects. Decent head is highly desirable. You should take a Test for Kents. Quote
kent_white Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 (edited) Bolton Wanderers are, but BWFC is. That's how I think it is supposed to be. As long as somebody is referring to BWFC as an entity, on the stock market for example, I'll grudgingly agree. But not when you're using the team name as a collective noun for a group of players. 'Manchester City is hoping to end its three match losing streak with a victory over Tottenham at White Hart Lane'. Shudder. Edited June 14, 2013 by kent_white Quote
birch-chorley Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 The thing is bolty you are split within schools by ability. At least when I went in the late 90's you did a test for each subject and then put into sets dependant on where you came in the overall rankings. This meant that the best at maths learnt at a faster pace with the other stronger mathematicians. I don't see how Grammar schools will make a difference. Quote
no balls Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 Birch is right. I went to a comp and didn't see the spaccy kids from registration till kicking out bell but at least the spaccy kids could move up sets if they tried instead of being dumped in a school at 11 that'd never let you aspire. Quote
Widnes Two Hats Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 In Sligo, they call Santa Claus Santy Claus, I have no idea why but it really irritates me And trainers are 'Runners' fucking runners, that irritates me too I've come to the conclusion that I have just turned into a miserable bastard because nothing ever bothered me now I'm finding I'm giving people far too many dirty looks and shaking my head way too much recently Quote
