Qatar World Cup

Right - forgetting the bent bidding process and the conditions of the migrant workers building the stadiums - does anybody else agree that a Nov/Dec competition has the potential to be ace?

Firstly because it will take up most of the traditional Christmas bullshit season so we'll all be talking about football and not festivities. Secondly just for the novelty factor. And thirdly because we can see whether or not our well worn excuse about our players being tired stands up to scrutiny.

Getting out of insanity hotel for a bit, i bet theres a few french cities on red alert

This thread has really cheered me up after feeling pretty gutted yesterday. I’m actually chucking reading some of these posts.

Taking the knee caused us to lose is my personal highlight.

Second is that Southgate hasn’t achieved anything in the “big games” yet his major tournament record is:

2018 - World Cup - Semi Finalists

2020 (21) - Euros - Finalists

2022 - World Cup - Quarter Finalists

On only one other occasion since 1966 have we reached the Semi Final of a World Cup. We have never reached a Euros final until he got us there.

Correlation does not imply causation! 🙂

World Cup 2018 - played 2 x good teams lost 2 x games.

World Cup 2022 played 1 good team lost 1 game.

There’s a pattern forming here.

That's somewhat true - but supporters from every team bar the winner are going to be saying the same thing all over the world, surely?

What about 2020(1)?

Not sure it's a "pattern" as such.

Going back decades would suggest there is though- that we're not all that good.

And on that basis, Southgate's tenure has seen an improvement.

If ultimately that's not deemed good enough, then so be it. Not sure how we'd go on attracting other managers with that sort of immediate pressure round their necks.

Not every team has a squad like we do. I guarantee Wales fans wouldn’t have been saying that! Who realistically think that they could win a major tournament? We need that next person to get us past the teams we are failing against. We are always coming up that bit short.

That's true. But we're consistently getting farther than we have for ages. I guess the choice is do you stick or twist in the hope that it might bet even better?

I've got a sneaking suspicion GS might call it a day anyway.

Maybe that's the thing why all the Brexiteers seem to favour GS getting potted? You'd rather take a risk than stick with the status quo?

Proper armchair psychology! 😁

Should he go it will be interesting to see if any big premiership clubs go in for him.

I reckon a few Championship ones might. Be very surprised if any really big clubs took a risk on him.

He just seems really well suited to international management for some reason. And he hardly ever puts a foot wrong in interviews. Like saying disabled people did something wrong in a previous life! 😁

I don't know. I got confused! It doesn't take much to be honest - you know that! 😁 Apologies!

No offence taken, was curious.

As it happens, I'm not sure that there's a standout candidate to replace him if they got rid.

Especially given he had the respect of the players.

There’s a pattern forming here.

The pattern is the more success you have in tournaments, the further you go and the more likely you are to play a big team. We outperformed Germany, Spain and Belgium this year. We reached the same stage as Brazil, Netherlands and Portugal.

We played Germany in Euro 2020 and won. We also played Croatia and won. We played Italy and it was all square after 120 mins, then lost on pens. You didn’t mention those big teams. Plus, no matter who you play, the World Cup quarter final (2018) and the Euro Semi-Final are massive games and he won them.

Spot on, but the site 'tards will just look at the result. Some will also say Jose would've led us to a 1-0 victory.

I mentioned Germany earlier they have been on the slide for years. Beating Sweden in a quarter is nothing to get over excited about and everyone would expect us to win that. Same as the semi against Denmark. We lost to Italy so that brings us down to Croatia. Well done Gareth you beat Croatia.

Average age with Jose as manager would be 33.  He hangs youngsters out to dry in the press the egotistical arse

The fella who's started handing out pretend badges like a Cbeebies presenter is saying Mourinho should be the next England manager? If that's not confirmation he's a WUM, I don't know what is.

Just imagine thinking one of the most successful managers in the history of the game would be a suitable replacement for Gareth Southgate. Bonkers ain’t it.

In the last 5 World cups, England have beaten:

Paraguay.

Trinidad & Tobago

Ecuador

Slovenia

Tunisia

Panama

Sweden

Columbia (Pens)

Iran

Wales

Senegal

And lost to

Portugal (Pens)

Germany

Italy

Uruguay

Belgium

Croatia

Belgium

France

Flat track Bullies, no matter who is the manager.

You really are blinkered. We lost in the Euro final on penalties and you’re passing it off as a nothing achievement. I’m not wasting my energy on this level of gammon.
