We've just won promotion using a gaggle of players nobody else wanted, littered with injury plagued loanees and players that were cast as cart horses, one trick ponies and generally weak as piss.

  • Like when we went up from league 2, we needed tried and tested players from that specific division/level to deal with the task in hand. Doyle and Sarcs etc. We need exactly the same in this divis

I would have thought that 3 centre halves and three midfielders would lend itself to a more attack minded wide player. Cover inside (as long as they're on their preferred side).

With three up front, and only 2 in midfield, then perhaps a more defensive minded wide man maybe appropriate?

I get that, and vice versa. My view (and it is only a view) is that 5-3-2 is best served by full backs who can also push forward (Cogley) while 3-4-3 requires wingers who can also track back (Schon).

Those who are equally good at both roles, are usually playing at a higher level than we are!

Weird formation 343 ... The 3 up top ... 2 are usually wingers (Collins, CMG, Schon) and 1 CF of Charles & Vic.

Then you've got the 4 in Midfield which also requires 2 wide men (Williams, Schon, Cogley, Conway, Jones.

2 Central Mids which we have 6 of.

What did we play today ... 352?

Perhaps we need a separate thread for "formations/tactics".

So is 3-4-3 plan a or b

I see how Collins and lolos fit in with  Charles in the middle

And Dan and CMG

Less so rumoured McAtee and Dembele

But no point in speculating on players we haven't signed

Guessing as it stands it's Sheehan and either Dempsey or GT or Arfield in the middle

Plan A 2.0 😁

Cannot see Sheehan playing as part of a 2 in midfield.

I'm wondering if the manager and staff are thinking about two separate formations, depending upon the opposition.

Two plan As maybe, until one starts to become preferred.

For me, we have all the tools required like we did last season.

The only thing that stopped us was us.

If we can conquer that bit there's no reason why we won't be up there punching.

Despite our obvious failings we were a couple of points/90mins away from promotion.

I honestly think that if Johnston had been fit for the season we would have gone up automatically . Because of that injury we played Toal and Jones out of position and the season before George covered for Santos going forward and covered for him at the back .

If he can get his form from 2 seasons ago then I think the defence is sorted with Johnston , Tantos , Toal and Forrestor and Forino to fill in when needed.

id prefer us to find a dynamite front partnership like  Reeves philliskirk, McGinlay Walker, or 2 beasts like Blake , Mixu  etc

Hopefully Collins and Charles is the one.

Indeed.  But at least I wouldn't be drawn in to read that particular discussion on false pretences.

Maybe we just have one big thread - "Bolton Wanderers"!

No the new one in town

John McAtee update.  Reliably informed that he has four offers in one from champ three from League 2 two of which are us and Wrexham.  Our offer is by far and away the best for him at this moment.  Hopefully this will progress this week one way or another

I can't help feeling that we would be looking to loan out a striker if he came in.

Yep just about to say that, or perhaps the club think an offer might come in for someone
