Fair enough, and it's all opinions at this stage isn't it. I'm largely behind the work SS is doing, and will remain optimistic until reason not to be.

I do think there are risks with the slightly more revolution over evolution approach, and the 4 year contracts make me a little nervous for various reasons. 

But time will tell. We'll be 'up there' next season, but I think it'll be hugely competitive and we are one of probably 10 teams that think they have a chance.

Would take them four spots being covered and anything up to six/eight getting shipped out will leave a bit of wriggle room for the likes of inwood Sharples etc to get a few games on the bench, cups etc

Would leave space for a premier loan player coming in at the end of the window.....I doubt half the rebuild is yet completed

If we think it's going to be 4-2-3-1 - The three is still hugely powder-puff in Tutu - Randall/Mcatee - Schon. I just cant see those three dominating anyone on cold midweek night especially away from home. 

 

 

Tutu and Schon aren't and have never been good enough to be starting wingers in a promotion chasing team. 

I think you can get a tune out of McAtee and Randall (and if you can't Sheehan/Dempsey can play there). CMG will be a better player this season than last, coming back mid-season after a bad injury. His record suggests there's a player there so I'm glad he's getting another chance.

But we absolutely need another striker and a winger with a credible history of scoring goals. Otherwise we're asking a bunch of lads past their mid-20s to suddenly gel and have career-best seasons.

No one knows what SS plans are, though I do see him as being more flexible and being prepared to use a "horses for courses" approach.

Morley is 6’ and has definitely bulked up over the last 12 months, so much so that we even used him as an centre half/mid hybrid in the latter part of the season. How bloody big do you want the midfielders to be? Even scrapper midfielders need to have a bit of poise, dexterity, speed and ability.

Regarding Thomason, my only doubt about whether he’s a backup, is whether he’s here at all. I believe he’s one for whom we’ll listen to offers (accepting that’s a long list!).

I think the need to replace the goals of Collins or the 10-15 you mention becomes less of a worry (not completely) if SS can sort out the defence. We completely leaked goals last season. And I’m sure stats would show the teams that concede the least will end up higher up the league.
Worth noting that even though I’m not his biggest fan, Mcatee only scored 1 less goal in the league than Collins last year. So it’s not like Collins was way out ahead of everyone.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we got Johnny Kenny on loan nearer deadline day. Watched the Aberdeen game in which he scored he didn’t look at all out of place and had a chat with some mates who have watched his development.

He is not a unit but he’s two footed, has great strength, reasonable pace, good vision and anticipation and an eye for goal - he could be great for us and I completely understand why we showed an interest.
Problem is, he’s viewed as a great prospect in Glasgow and being just 22, our offer was considered borderline cheeky.

But with Celtic bringing in the lad from Fulham I can’t see Kenny getting much game time at this stage of his development - so a loan would make sense to the Hoops. Whether it’s us or someone else that gets him on loan is debatable, but I reckon that the only things that would prevent him going out are a sudden maturity to allow him to force his way into the team or a higher offer which would come with the risk of overpaying. From what I’ve seen and been told, he would be worth an upped bid as long as it’s not too daft.

Birmingham dominated League One with a midfield consisting of only 1 player at 6ft (just) in a 4231. The others are 5'8/5'9 (on a good day).

It's about how strong you are and prepared to get hurt as much as a height thing (though that in theory comes into play on set pieces, unless you're McAtee and hate heading it).  Spearing was a strong player for us of no great height, Collins was 6'3 or thereabouts and a wet fart.

A midfield of Simons, Thomason and Morley ought to be able to handle itself

That is fair enough on the height question. There are lies, damn lies and the internet!

However, I do feel Morley has developed strength, tackling and controlled aggression attributes, to complement his existing vision, ball playing and set piece skills over the last 12 months. These I attribute to his time with Wycombe and latterly with Schumacher.

I have confidence in him, especially, and Simons for the 2 x “6” roles.

I know at Fleetwood there were concerns around his resilience and work rate. Reading between the lines i think similar with us. CMG was disgraceful when he came on at Blackpool. I was undecided previously and largely agreed with what you say above. 
However, he lost me that day and, for me, he is another who can just leave asap.

I came away from that Brum game thinking 'fuck me, he's actually got something and he's worth giving a good go' but that was for him, like a fair few others, an out-of-character positive spike in an otherwise very flat graph

CMG, Matete, Liam Trotter. Players who  ran the show against us every time that I was buzzing to sign and turned out not very good. There are for sure many others.

I’d been hopeful over CMG in his absence, and his comeback appearance at Wrexham was lively. Kind of lost faith by the end, but probably down to the lacklustre finish.
Hope he comes back strong and does well if he is in plans as Schuey suggested.
