By that logic no-one below the top 8 would be able to afford players because they're all sustaining massive losses and will have less revenue than we do next year.

A quick look at PNE's accounts and they're spending 6M on Devine despite having an 11m loss and only 18m on turnover. What am I missing?

No.

You've forgot (or don't understand) that all clubs have something in the 'pot' already at the start of each season (I mention in my post above that we have about £12m I reckon).

So if FV puts in say £15m this season, we would have £27m in the pot.

The same sort of scenario would be happening at Preston and all the other clubs too.

IF we were to have a £6m loss the season due to start, then we would have £21m available to us - so we could buy a £6m player if we wanted to.

The thing is though all clubs have to think forward to future seasons as well (if we can only put in up to £33m equity over 3 years (and we trade each year at a loss) then if we put in £15 in Year I, we can only put in a further £18m to fund losses for Year 2 and 3 AND leave something in the pot for the start of Year 4.

We could gamble and spend most of the £21m we have available in Year 1 and hope player sales in future would be sufficient to cover future trading losses, or we could be somewhat more prudent.

Preston has a squad that was good enough to keep them in the Championship so can buy a £6m player to strengthen them, we on the other hand need to build a squad to survive the first year in the Championship.

We too have the money to buy a £6m player if we wanted to (maybe we will?) BUT we also need to be able to build a squad to keep us up with whatever of the budget is left bearing in mind what I've said above about Years 2, 3 and 4.

I think that’s a fair observation.

I don’t think anyone’s to blame.

And SS will be more frustrated than we are.

But we really do need forward reinforcements.

I think things will start moving for all clubs sooner rather than later as players at the top return from the WC, the domino effect should then kick in

I firmly expect us to be in for Kenny, whether we get him or not I don't know, but nothing happens till Celtic have got their shit together, and no doubt they are waiting on ins and outs too

and I don't expect us to sign ACD, but it's only now that his next move is starting to be talked about with the link to Rangers now that Brighton are getting their players back together

I'll reckon we'll have all we need in by the end of the window, and of course hope not having everything we need doesn't set us back too much in August

be reet

One last time for Sluffy..........We can spend 85% of our turnover on transfers/wages

Say it is 20m this coming season that will be 17m. Then on top of that the board can add 33m over 3 seasons. So that works out at 11m per season up to a maximum 15m for one season

It does NOT matter if the club has major losses every season...........So theoretically we could spend roughly 32m on transfers/wages in one season

Sluffy it matters not if there is no equity in the club that 33m will have to be found by the board

They have then a choice of funding it or not.

FFS don’t start all this again.

We’re not spending £5m+ on ACD so it’s all irrelevant.

I’m with @Casino - I still think he goes out on loan this season.

Preston max spend on 18m turnover would be 15.3m and one 15m added out of the 33m would be 30.3m for the coming season.....Again the 11m loss the previous season matters not

Agreed, just life lower down the football food chain isn't it. I wonder if Barnsley fans are sweating on us making moves so they can try for McAtee on loan, who knows?

Still frustrating, mind. Even though I'm fully accepting of the fact our starting XI v Preston might look a lot different to the one at the end of August, that's still a month where we need to be targeting points from. Especially those two home games.

Lots, we're all missing lots. What's going on in Preston's accounts, what money their owners have, what they would like to spend on players, what the actual deal for Devine is (because it won't be £6m in one lump sum up front).

I know to some extent we all discuss things on here from a place of little knowledge, but getting weighed down in the accounts stuff is a fools errand. If club's want to spend, there's enough wiggle room in the regulations to allow them to do so. Easier just to see what actually happens and go from there.

It matters in the sense the losses still need to be covered by a cash injection from the board

A cash injection that is now limited

Or at least that's the point @Sluffy is making

One journalist is reporting Rangers won't be signing ACD and that he's be signing a new contract instead

I did have a few pints last night tbh.

Would be an odd move really. Yes, European football but I'd expect him to score 15-20 up there based on last season.

Signs new contract and boom back out on loan. The lad isn't going to get near bha first team squad.

Still crazy when we now consider bha, brentford, Bournemouth as settled premier league clubs.

Correct....Clubs like Stoke and Wrexham will use these new rules to the maximum

Losses in accounts and cash losses are 2 completely separate things... The bottom line figure in a set of financial statements isn't necessarily the cash that needs injecting into the business. Similarly the "mystical pot" isn't cash. There is no rule to state you need positive equity to run a business, and as a club its safe to say our tangible asset costs are understated.

Wrexham are a different beast, they were forecasting +£60m of revenue 25/26 on the back of the commercial impact of the owners, that'll be more in 26/27 undoubtedly... They can spend more than most in the division if they so wished under SCR rules.

Thanks for posting the interview was all over Facebook last night that SS had given an interview where he was ‘fuming’ , clearly frustrated but knows that is the way things are.

I would be surprised as things are developing if we do not get Kenny back and still think ACD on loan is a realistic opportunity, his time here last year was the almost perfect loan for him , us and Brighton.

and if he has anything like a similar impact this year, hes10million plus, even for top end second tier

not saying we get him, but theres a lot of reasons why we are in a good place

Having watched tonight's game, the striking situation is really urgent. Dalby's having to play the bulk of all the friendlies as there's no-one to give him a half off and us still be able to play the same system.

Dalby himself has looked pretty laboured so far and didn't get much change tonight out of two rudimentary mid table L2 CBs. If he's to start us off in Champ he needs some serious pace and energy around him.

I was thinking that v Everton, we've gone from hoping Dalby can step up to the championship and be in and around the forward line along with everyone else, to flogging him even more than last season, when he was at least interchangeable with Burstow. He'll be nackered even before the season starts and physically he's not one of those players that you'd want playing 100 minutes twice a week like some (fitter) players can get away with.

Its one thing over relying on a top player eg ACD or Sheehan last season, to over relying on a player where the jury is very much out as to whether he's good enough for this level.

Bit of over-reading of it (as is the way) to suggest he was 'fuming', and his short answer could just as easily be seen as not giving anything away. Tricky also when asked in the midst of his thoughts on what he'd just seen, some of which he might not have liked

I wonder how many fans, of any team, are enthused for the season ahead based on their friendlies so far

A quarter of this season's Prem (Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton, Fulham, Hull) had average crowds of 4k or less over a period in the 80s or 90s

maybe so

but, if i took anything from SS interview, he says Dalby needs work and thrives on it

ie last season a very slow start post injury

10, maybe 12
