Sweep Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 Just heard an interesting discussion on the radio, talking about how UK will probably not look to sign a trade deal with the US as things stand, and they'll leave that until they've built up deals with the CANZAC countries. Reason being that whilst China and US are in a trade war, we don't/won't want to be seen to be picking sides. Hopefully China/US issues can be resolved in the next year or two, and then we can happily trade with both freely. It's thought signing a trade deal with one, might hinder the ability to freely trade with the other in the short term, which makes sense, and let's be honest, it'd be difficult to know which of these two superpowers you want to deal with, as in reality we need both of them equally. Now we're getting to the business end of this, it's getting quite interesting (if you're into that sort of thing, I appreciate for your average man on the street, it's dull and means nothing to them) Quote

Not sure how much better than the EU one it is, mixed reports all over so best ignored and see what the end result is. It's what we voted for. Pioneers like me & Miami & Bolty To be honest, it doesn't need to be any better in reality, just as long as it's not worse, because that wouldn't be great. I'd be happy with it being the same, as I'm sure most would. I bet those nips are loving that fact that Melton Mowbray pork pies are going to be tariff free Quote
Spider Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 I'm just off over to Twitter to see whether Terry Christian has burst his spleen yet, will let you all know. Quote

Tonge moor green jacket Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 slightly off topic, but 6.6% growth in July is good news. October looks like seeing the start of more unemployment, so anything positive beforehand is a boon. Quote
Escobarp Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 Starting from a artificially low position so was always going to be that level of increase. But as you highlight this is the calm before the storm and that’s without a second lockdown. End of furlough = huge numbers of newly unemployed sadly Quote
Spider Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 November will be awful. I know loads of people on standby for redundancy. Loads. Good people too, smart, well qualified types who are genuinely preparing to take any work they can get. Might be some very overskilled baristas about soon. And I'm not joking. Quote

And I'm not joking. another of our customers today has announced that 30 of their staff (around 40% of them) are to be made redundant shortly, they're keeping them furloughed as long as possible, then will let them go. They're into facilities management, and as our contact said "Of there is no fucker in the buildings, they don't need managing" - the majority of those they're letting go are the fitters/installers as they see that side of their business completely dropping off for the next 12-24 months. I'm curious to know how exactly the increase was measured, as a lot of the money spent would have been furlough cash. Quote

Almost everyone I’ve met has a different story and experience. People have been spending their money in different ways whether furloughed, in work or even redundant. Mainly on the house & garden. Where people were spending £2000 on a holiday, they are spending it on home improvements. I’m in the same boat. Saving on holidays but spending on home improvements. Bad news for the travel industry but other businesses are benefiting. Spending in the UK rather than abroad could give an artificial boost to the economy. All good in the short term but hopefully there will still be a travel industry as we know it when things get back to normal. Quote

The cliff edge awaits though in November, we’re expecting a real slide. Quote

Tonge moor green jacket Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 Can well imagine Boby. Garden centres and suppliers short of products this year. Some down to lack of availability from manufacturers, and some purely because of demand. At one time, i went to 3 places just for a big of compost for one customer. Mahers up Morris Green have been snowed under, even during what is normally a quieter period. Quote

The whole world is buying acrylic sheets. Can’t imagine why. Trying to predict how this pandemic is going to affect the economy is a little bit tricky. Quote
