I am sure of it. The only comments about gunboats in the channel would have been from myself only unless I am mistaken - mainly because it worked for Australia. On each and every occasion the comment has been to turn back the boats transporting the illegal immigrants or to escort them back to French beaches. No one has ever mentioned shooting at the dinghies. My suggestion would save lives not end them. He really is a fucking imbecile at times. Quote

Also, we have vastly more issues than immigration but it's the one bellweather topic that inflames people. I live in Kent and funnily enough I do agree with the problems here - we are the area that this happens in. I get it when people don't feel they are listened to. What I don't agree with is when the poorest, and those who are most desperate, feel the brunt of our anger because our own governments have let many parts of this country down for many, many years. Great post tbf. Totally agree, I'm in the same boat (pardon the pun) working in Blackpool, I could write a book on the failings that have led the town to its current state. Buy I also contract for various landlords who are currently being promoted and offered vast amounts of money and incentive to go down the route of housing migrants. This will only make the powder keg situation worse. You think folk are angry, polarised and ready to kick off/ vote reform now, just wait till all these persecuted migrants move in next door. It's not the answer. Smashing the gangs is only a small part the answer. There's vast network of people profiteering at an industrial scale with this issue. It's one big giant food chain where people have no inclination to stop it. I've just been called naive. I'd say it's more naive to think this problem is just Syrian families fleeing wars and we simply have to do our bit. That's absolute bollocks. It's a racket. A European wide racket, aided by our Government. The same Government that's now offering monstrous incentives to Landlord's across the country to take these people in. That's not smashing the gangs, that's helping them. Quote
Not in Crawley Posted May 4, 2025 Posted May 4, 2025 Again I'd just say that the legislation isn't law yet, saying smash the Gangs isn't helpful, just as Stop the Boats wasn't. But the legislation to give greater power to Boarder control is, but it will takes years, not months to fix this. And at last we have a government and and him secretary that is finally grasping this nettle. Quote

Writings on the wall and they’re upping their game. smash the Gangs is a shit slogan. Slogans are shit in general and I suspect Starmer knows that was a bad idea. 5 years time, we can properly assess how it’s going. People are, understandably, impatient but will just have to eat the sandwich. Quote
royal white Posted May 4, 2025 Posted May 4, 2025 Forget the smash the gangs bollocks. Britain along with Europe have been targeting these gangs for years, it’s nothing new and it’s strange why Labour have been using this slogan. The gangs will never disappear, we know this. We need deterrents. Quote

We need deterrents. Well not hugely and not successfully. I agree any slogan isn't great because it's the boring political trudge work that will change this. And yes deterrents work, but not as much as working alongside our European partners. Frustrating though that maybe. This new legislation to given greater powers away from Westminster is a huge step forward. Let's give the government time to really put this into practices is my point and then judge them on their successes or failures. Quote

If not, then we can criticise, but just bleating 'it's all crap' isn't a point of view, it's simply an emotional gut reaction. I'd be interested to know what your thoughts are on how to stop boat crossings (which actually as a percentage make up a tiny amount of the problems of asylum seekers in the UK) Quote

Well the 'vast majority' are going to have to learn than deep seated global political issues don't get sorted by cheap slogans. Again, given this new legislation, what are your issues with it and what do you think needs to be done that is currently not? I'm just interested because critiquing comes with the question of, what do you think is lacking? Quote
